Hi everyone, I am in Peterborough Ontario.

Roly0217 06-30-2008 09:46 PM

Here in Miami, FL. About 15 minutes from Miami Beach and 35 or so from Orchid Country ( Homestead, FL)

quiltingwacko 06-30-2008 11:04 PM

Southern Oregon. Though we are not burning down like California is, we have all the smoke up here right now.

JennS 07-01-2008 12:10 PM

Another one from Florida! :)

I live in Orlando, FL (central FL) and I think we have pretty good growing conditions here. I keep my orchids outside until the occassional frost/freeze. Then it's to moving them all inside which is really fun with all the tiny baby pots I have (vanda and catt babies) and usually results in little creatures all over the house. Most commonly are baby frogs and lizards, which make the cats quite happy... Me, not so much! I don't mind them, but feel bad when I find a half eaten one....

As for my orchids (the real kids of the house) I have all sorts, most recenly in love with Vandas and Brassavola types. Vandas are especially happy right now with all the rain and the others are under the overhang so they don't get drenched every day.

Jenn et al- I leave mine outdoors unless it WILL get below freezing! That was only once this past year and it was the usual drop down then up. Below freezing, I group them all together on the ground and cover with blankets, including some stakes to raISE IT LIKE A TENT. This way, very little comes inside. I've never seen any adverse growth, even on the "warm" phals...Greg in New Port Richey where a lot of rain has missed me! argh!

William 07-01-2008 03:12 PM

Good to hear from all the Floridians! I'm A former New Yorker now living in Miami for about thirty years now. I'm down south near Homestead. Welcome to new and old timers as well.

William 07-01-2008 03:16 PM

Don't want to leave out the northerners. Welcome to you. Any orchidholics in Colorado? I'll be travelling that way this summer. How's about Alaska? Too much tyo ask?

The tent idea is a good one! I never thought of that. I have a shepards hook that had one of my vandas hanging on it and I could probably use that and drape some blankets over. I would still bring the vandas and the babies in though...I get too nervous to chance it. Thanks for the good advice!

I'm in Orlando, FL. Sun and Rain every day it seems! But my chids outside love it ;)

greg sytch 07-04-2008 11:14 AM

Cool pics Jackie. I love the lathhouse and the room with the blooms. Which part of Orlando? I'm in New Port Richey, close to US19 and the Gulf so I am a little warmer for the area. I grow mine under shadecloth in outdoor houses, no winter cover and they do fine! Greg....sweltering, wet and moist lately....making life soooo much easier on the garden!

Great photos Jackie. So many orchidholics from so many places. It's nice that a flower gets us together. Guess that's flower power for you.

Gloxinia 07-08-2008 09:12 AM

Stockholm, Sweden is where I live along with my 9 Phalaenopsis, 1 Cattleya, 1 Miltonia, 1 Paphiopedilum and lots of other potted plants. Er...my boyfriend and 2 cats live here as well, almost forgot ;)

A constant fight between me and the cats about the reason I grow things...they tell me I do it for them only, but I tend to disagree in most cases. Especially when they extatically jumping drag baby plants all over the house.

Wow, now that is an old house!! It must be wonderful. Hope you enjoy the site and come back often.
Have you been to the "Break the Ice" forum on the front page? We would all like to hear more about the orchids you grow and your home.

Recently joined (after finally admitting that I am an orchid tragic), and I live in Melbourne Australia.

I have about 60 orchids, which is not near enough. Different types, but I tend to gravitate towards fragrant ones.

Cheers,

Deb

Hello everyone!
I live in Cyprus, in the north-east corner of Europe. I only have 5 Phals at the moment as I have begun my collection a few months ago.
The climate is too hot and dry here, but I try to do my best. I think the Phals appreciate my efforts because 2 of them have started to grow new spikes for the first time :)
Many thanks to all orchidboard members for the useful information and for sharing their experiences.

Edmonton Alberta here 3b Zone. Getting cold now, fresh snow!

Jkelee 11-21-2008 12:58 PM

Hi Greg, I am by the OIA (Int. airport).
You're soooo lucky to live by the Gulf, in that warm breeze

I had to build that "Chid Hotel", under shade cloth, cause I was running out of room in the GH. They're great out there from Spring to Fall, but the winter is hard outside! I have to wrapped them up as much as I can with blankets, and heaters! Burrrrrr!! Hate these COLD FL winter nights!!

I'm Betsy and I'm in the mountains of Asheville, NC

Ross 11-21-2008 01:41 PM

Welcome Betsy. I love that part of the world and while I was working for the USFS I tried many times to get a position there, but you happen to live in the Eden of America it seems and competition did me in, I'm afraid. Glad your here.

Marissa 11-21-2008 01:48 PM

Long Beach, CA here. Born and raised in the Philippines. Been an orchid junkie for a few months now and have about 50 chids give and take.

I hope you all noticed the breadth of members we have here! I am always amazed at how world-wide orchid growing is (and can be) and how it crosses all boundaries. I also appreciate how this board crosses all boundaries. How do I (carefully) say this? :hmm I think there are some boards (not necessarily orchid growers) that pride themselves in being of a certain class or gender or nationality. I am really happy to see that this board transcends all these potential barriers. We discuss what we care about most - orchids. We thrive on pictures and local info from those in orchid-rich locals. It's really comforting to me to be able to discuss a topic with someone from half the world away, as if that person were sitting right here. When I tell people here, I socialize with people from Sweden, the UK, SE Asia, Japan or Taiwan, on and on, they are amazed.

Amanda L 11-21-2008 04:41 PM

I'm in Nashville, Tennessee. I am so very new to orchids and loving every second of it (well, minus the rot). So far I have 4 orchids, 3 if you don't count the Phal I have managed to kill in 3 months. Let's hope she gives me a keiki!! I plan on getting many, many, many, many more orchids. I think I am finally starting to get things right! YAY!!

I agree! Orchids are an amazing unifying force.

Wow, I made it to page 16 and gave up. :whew
So I'll just say where I'm from and leave it at that. Pop quiz!

What small "town" in Southwest Washington State is near both the I-5 corridor and Mt. St. Helens and has a name like a certain salutation minus the "loo"?

Give up? I'm from a little place called Toutle (pronounced "tootle"). Pretty similar directions as getting to Maine, just go west a lot more;) . Sorry, too many posts, can't remember who that was. I don't even consider it a town, just a fire station, a K-12 school, and a few small businesses in the middle of nowwhere on the way to everywhere else.

My two goals for now (besides getting through college and all those little things:biggrin: ) are getting a greenhouse and going to an actual orchid show some day.

Toutle-loo!
