I live in New Port Richey, Tampa Bay along the Gulf Coast of FL....about 30 mins south of Susanne in Spring Hill - and a whole zone higher. We are 9b, most winters 10a. Last year we hit 29F for the first time below 30F since 1996. Only one night at or below freezing all winter. I grow my orchids outside in shadehouses with no cold protection. In case of a cold snap, I use frost cloth OR place them on the ground where it is warmer.

Old Field is such a beautiful area .. I use to go to Port Jeff all the time and I have kayaked out of Conscience Bay, Setauket .. nothing like seafood bisque in a bread bowl in the restaurant (it's name eludes me) across from the Danford (East American Bistro, I believe it's called now). It's been a while ![Very Happy](http://www.orchidboard.com/community/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

I don't know about the Planting Fields group but the Suffolk and the Long Island groups are good. I would join which ever is closer because you do more stuff together; car pooling, repotting, buying and such.

My daughter lives in Bradenton and I put a lot of Den. nobile in trees at her house. They get no attention and were a mass of blooms in March. I haven't tried anything else besides the denderobium yet. Marie Selby has a lot of stuff out side and it thrives.

I used to live in Long Island before Florida. Smithtown and Central Islip. It's been a long time. I didn't even imagine growing orchids in the cold. Goes to show how much I knew.

Yes. I remember the bull and the paint job done on it when the kids were feeling frisky. I was a kid then myself but I never took part in those antics. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Next time you're through the area, stop by at "The Gardens". If it happens to be on a Saturday, you will probably find me hanging out at the Orchid Wall either messing around with the display or smoozing with the guests. Am usually there most of the day, most Saturdays. Stop by and say "Hi"!

You have the same problem as me, I think one of the reasons is because we live in the city, night temperatures are horrible to trigger blooms!
