Weston, Florida (10 miles west of Ft Lauderdale). It is hot, humid, and rains daily from now until October. The orchids love it! I grow my plants in a shade house.

Another Michigander

I'm from Redford Michigan, which is called "The gateway to the suburbs" because it is the first community just west of Detroit.

I am surprised by the amount of Michigan folk on this site. I think we are only second to the Florida folk.

I live in Bailey, Colorado. . .about 60 miles, south and west of Denver, "up the hill" to the Bailey outback at 8,650 ft. Yes, we have air at this altitude. lol

I can see Pikes Peak on clear days from my deck and Mount Evans on my way to work.

We have lots of deer, bear, mountain lions and foxes.

Next to nothing grows outside but TALL pine trees, spruce and aspen trees. A FEW bushes but lots of grasses and wildflowers.

What little we could grow here, gets too dry, gets eaten by something or can't take the altitude (bright sun and drying winds). I think we're considered a montane zone (which is a tiny step down from desert, btw). But I've managed to get some coolio plants to do well in my one big flower bed, lamb's ears, lavender, poppies & daylilys, salvia does great, a few penstimons, and a few wild iris'. . .but I have to supplement their watering with an underground drip irrigated system (to minimize water usage). Water conservation is a big deal here and I have to be very careful about it. We're on well water.

All my orchid growing must be done indoors, in glass tanks!

Hi everbody, I live in New Plymouth New Zealand, where it's begining to turn cool after one of the best summers I can remember, it's been the best year for orchids that I can remember. How I wish that we had as many orchid shows to visit as you have. Happy growing Masda.
So much to learn so little time

Hi Masda.

Why was this summer a good one?

Chippy28 04-13-2008 11:33 PM

Add another Michigander to the list.:)

I am from West Bloomfield, MI which is about 45 minutes northwest of Detroit.

Another Michigander for the list. I live in Hudsonville, about midway between Grand Rapids and Holland.

I grow all my orchids inside under lights.

It was long and warm and only 4days of rain in 11weeks, we normally have lousy summers.
