My first Cattleya, pot it?
Hi,
I received my first Cattleya orchid, I have 2 phals in spike and a few unknowns. This Cattleya is much smaller than expected. I would like to repot this into orchid bark which is mostly what I use. Should I? Please any advice would be great.

Does it need to be repotted? Maybe wait till spring and new growth. It looks like there's room for a couple more pseudobulbs in there.

There is definitely more room I guess I am just worried about it drying out since it is so small and dainty. My other orchids are planted right into orchid pots and are doing well. Is it necessary to do this with little orchids such as this? I am worried about keeping it growing in this tiny pot.

What is it potted in? The pot is not to small I would leave it. I have just gotten 12 new catt family orchids and they are in pots like this and I am in no way re-potting them until they need it.

I also wonder what it is potted in. Almost looks like moss with live moss on the top? I only have a few cattleyas or their hybrids, but in general my cats do better growing on the dryer side. Some of them are smaller and not mature plants so I think they may need a little more watering than the mature ones, but I think being too wet is much more of a problem than being on the dry side. I agree that it is best to re-pot when the roots are in active growth though. If it was my cat. and tightly packed in moss, I would just remove some moss and loosen the remaining moss to give the roots a little more air and to make sure they weren't too wet.

really, it looks fine in that size pot, but you might want to put some new bark in it....I don't trust the moss on top, that is generally indicative of media breaking down..try very large bark, with a little charcoal and perlite in it...I do not recommend a larger pot! good luck!

Remember that media in small pots will dry more quickly than in larger pots.

Hi there, Just thought I would update this post to show the new growth. Still room for more bulbs I guess. This thing grows slowly.
What do you think?

Whoa, is that all that is has grown in a year? Something isn't right with the culture if that is the case.

Looks like it's getting plenty of water, my guess would be light. Are the leaves a bright apple green?
