Dendrobium B4/After and During pics. - Orchid Board

I have seen this nursery for many months but kept thinking nah they wont have any orchids. I stopped and they had a monster possibly a nobile type orchid but boy did he ever need some work here are some pictures of the before.
I can OFFICIALLY say I DID NOT DO THIS FOR ONCE!!

WHAT in the world is it that they are in though, the outer shell is like this weird wood/foam stuff its odd. It allowed the roots to grow into it, and did not seem to cause any issues. Not sure but anyways here, they are last picture is of them soaking in seaweed/fert mix I feel that they did not know that these have to be fed.

Totally off topic that has a totally insane phalenopsis that had basil keiki's growing off of the spikes, and there looked to even be a 3 spike coming up w the other two that were already in bloom...can you say to much seaweed hahaha.

Now post soaking and rinsing to place them in mix. I am going to add more lava rock to make sure that the roots have ample room to breath. They were packed so tightly before.

They now have been cleaned, trimmed and placed in new pots I chose lava rock. Now only question is what type is it and will it go into rest mode?

In the centre picture (damn you website spellchecker, its "centre" in Australia

), is that an old cut-off flower spike coming up between the top two leaves in the foreground ?

Few leaves will turn yellow and drop off within a few months but is not caused by disease is a selfdefense measure to balance the available water between the absorption from the roots and transpiration from the leaves. Keikis should start growing at the terminal end of stems within 2-3 months.

The old medium appears to be large chunks of coconut. The color of the water (dark) would point toward that as well. It's a great medium for supplying moisture w/out being soggy.

Personally, I would not bury the canes that deeply under the lava. There are better ways to secure the plant until it's stable enough to stand up on it's own. I use a few different things but pot clips and stakes tend to be my main 2 solutions. W/your current method...one good bump to your pot and the lava could damage any new growths that will emerge and/or the plant can easily become unstable again.

As for what type of Den it is...I don't think it's a nobile type...looks more like a phal type den to me. BUT...I am by no means an expert when it comes to Dens so hopefully someone w/more experience in that area will pop along soon.

After posting this I saw someone elses den phal type and am pretty sure it is a cross of that. Okay I will worj on the potting method. Thanks Katrina.

Yes they apparently buy them in spike. She gave it to me for 1/2 since it was no longer in bloom

Only reason I asked was that all my nobile-type dendrobiums flower from the sides of the canes, they are topped by a single leaf.

None of them have a spike that comes out the top of the cane like your photo, which makes me think it isn't a nobile type. What it is, I don't know. Just offering an opinion on what it isn't.

I like the potting in lava rock here. I find that large pieces like this are very stable and these can be watered a lot. The more water the better here. The lava will stay wet, making a nice micro environment but allowing the roots to dry off. Good air flow too. I'd water this on warm days around every three days or so. Keep it warm.
