New Growth at end of Phal Stem
Question New Growth at end of Phal Stem

I brought my flowering phal to work a few months ago. It had 8 blooms on one stem. The flowers finished and dropped about a month ago. That was normal. Then I admit I neglected this orchid and didn't cut back the stem (normally I would cut it back to the first node and hope for a side spike). I just looked at it yesterday and there's new growth coming from the end of the stem. I've seen side spikes, or just new basal spikes, but I've never had growth from the end of an old spike. Do you think it will just put out one more bloom or could this extend out further to a longer stem? If' you've had this happen to you before, please share your experience and/or advice. Photos attached below.

The other thing I noticed is that there are little drops of sap, or "happy juice"? around the old nodes. Is this a good sign, or just left over from the blooms?
Thanks.

I have three phals that bloom normally and then, after the flowers fall off, they extend the spike and continue to produce one or two flowers at a time for a few months. That looks like what your orchid is doing. It's different than growing a secondary flower spike. I think it happens when there's a sequentially blooming species used in the breeding process. Enjoy your new flowers.

Seems like phals have a mind of their own. They flower when they want and you never know when! It is putting out more buds for you at the end of that spike. I had a phal do this also.

I will post a pic of one of mine that did this too. It's crazy. The whole new part's stem is like a red color instead of green like the rest. But it sent out several new buds. No bloom as of yet.
You think you know all about orchids and them stuff like this happens. I used to think it could only rebloom after all the blooms fall and you cut to a node. As someone mentioned above, I do think this is different than a side spike when it gets cut. Idk about calling it sequential though, bc I THINK sequential a do a bud or two, bloom, bud, bloom. But of course u have misunderstood several times before so perhaps I'm wrong again.

PS I have two different phals making new buds at the end.

An update - the first bud just blasted - turned yellow and then fell off before growing to maturity. There's been no changes to the environment. Not sure what happened? Any advice on how I can avoid this for the subsequent buds?
