dendro leaves are a changing...now what do I do!
To say me and my dendro. To my kids dont get along is a minor understatement. It hates the potting media I put it in and sulks; REFUSES to stay in its pot no matter what I do short of going REALLY REALLY REDNECK and ducttaping it in. (And yes I have had that thought.)
So I realized that the other day it had fallen out its pot AGAIN!!!!
I BET maybe 1-2 days laying in my bleeding heart bucket that is moist but not wet...
So since the leaves are full on yellow. With the spots you see when others go to sleep heres the big ?
WHAT DO I DO WITH IT NOW? can I just leave it in the bucket till it becomes and ugly cane and wait for new root growth and then repot it?
Do leave it dry and un potted like my catasetum?
Sorry been doing county survey in a class and I have no memory anymore. And I cant find my notes either...pretty sure it is buried under books notes and papers....

Is it a Dendrobium or a Dendrochilum? There is a big difference between the two species.

And, if Dendrobium...what kind? The species is vast and has wide ranging cultural requirements.

Are you saying it is a nobile type and the name is To My Kids?
If it is a nobile type, then reduce the watering and stop all watering when totally leafless until you get buds or new leaves in the spring.

Yes to your answers. Other question do I put it back in a pot or just leave it be potless?

Kindra, few tips and questions. I have quite a few nobile Dendros. This is what is recommended by the seller here in Florida - STOP any fertilizing the end of August. Keep watering (you'll see that the new leaves are still growing). In fall, when the growth of the new leaves ends, lower watering, but still keep watering to make sure your cane are nice and filled with water! Once your Dendro looses it's leaves, stop watering and wait for buds or new growth to start again regular regime (cca between December to spring). Nobile type may not even loose all it's leaves, as I heard, but you should still give it some winter rest even when few leaves are still on, to promote buds formation in spring.
QUESTION - why do you want to keep it out of the pot? and why do you keep your catasetums unpotted?
To help you stabilize it, look at my pictures - I did get the wire stabilizers, they come in different sizes/lengths and help you keep your Denderos in the pots. Also, I use bamboo sticks and covered wire to mount canes to it. As you can see all my nobile dendros are pretty much staying in the pot thanks to this, and even pretty huge Dendro goldschmidtianum is happy with bamboo and wire.
As for the catasetums and unpotted - check the pics of my catasetum I got from Thailand. It was already leafless and in winter rest mode. I did pot it (came bare root), and keep it dry ever since, it has 2 new growths already starting at the base. I will wait for these to have roots at least some 2-3 inches and than start to water again. I would not keep my catasetums out of the pots:-)

I am really not sure about lava rocks, I do use different mixes - some of my nobiles are in straight Aussie gold and they seem loving it, some are in regular Dendro mix. You have to be sometimes adventurous, there is many things you can do - pot it into the Dendro mix, but get these wire stabilizers, or actually create your own stabilizers. For the cymbidium divisions that were impossible to pot I did create stabilizing by connecting to wires in the middle and making kind of the bridge. Nobiles can be really clumsy, especially thanks to the heavier juiced canes after the summer, but you can make it work - make the ring from bamboo sticks when potting it, than wire the canes to the ring maybe?

Can you post a picture of your nobile so we know how it looks maybe?
