Thank you!

When I water them i take them out the ceramic pots and let the water run through the plastic one and then leave the water to drain out properly before putting them back in the ceramic ones?

Well I am hoping to expand to something a bit different than NOID phals but that are still not too complex to care for.. do you have any suggestions? I am soon to be the owner of a leopard Orchid (I am sure it has a very more fancy and complex name than that but that is what I know it as)

Also YAY I can post pictures now I think

I can understand the desire to get some registered/named varieties.

As for suggestions, what are your growing conditions-light, temperature, desire to water, amount of space, etc? With this info, I could give you more-specific recommendations that you can feasibly grow in your existing conditions with minor to no modifications.

In the meantime, here is a website to whet your appetite. I have found some wonderful varieties on this site, but sadly getting them shipping "across the pond" would just cost too much

oo well I am the right side of the pond for them! With regards to specifics growing conditions.... temp wise.. I live in wet and windy Wales... temps here not particularly high... around 14 degrees c at the moment. I am happy to water whenever they need it! Not a huge amount of space really and lighting... my house is fairly dark.. the sun drops through the front of the house late afternoon for a few hours and that's about all the sun we get!

Does that help at all?

Is that 14°C the temperature inside your house or the temperature outside? Being in Whales, you will pretty much have to grow indoors year round because if I understand your climate correctly, you don't get above 21°C for very long, correct?

I think that some good types for someone looking for somewhat easier culture would include oncidium intergenerics, phragmipedium, miltoniopsis, or cattleya. Depending on how warm you keep your home, you would probably look for intermediate to cool-growing plants (cattleyas especially). Oncidiums and phragmipediums tend to have a large temperature tolerance.

Some of my favorite phragmipediums include phrag. besseae or phrag jason fischer (I love the red coloring). There are many types of phrags out there. Besseae is a good low-light orchid that will do well in phal light or less -Fox Valley Orchids recommends that they be grown around 800 foot candles or so...

Oncidiums come in all shapes and colors. 2 of my favorites are Onc. Twinkle and Burr. Nelly Isler 'Swiss beauty'. These types can do phal lighting, but they often like some strong light between 2000-3000fc or so for best blooming. Mine grow next to my cattleyas under the lights due to spacing, so they can be adjustedmto higher light. The odontoglossum and odontocidium types normally like to be grown a little cooler, as well. *some oncidium-types can fet quite large. For example, Onc. Sharry Baby (orchid that smells of chocolate when it blooms) can have leaves that a foot long or more and spikes can easily grow to 4ft+! (Some people like to stake them up, others let the spike curve a bit for a more compact display)

Cattleyas like lots of light and many like warmer temps as well ~23°C at least during the day with a drop in temp during the evening. For more information on cattleyas, you can look at my blog where I got into depth about general catt culture (). I personally love some of the bigger catts, but I dont have room to grow them. One of my favorites from my collection is Pot. Burana Beauty 'Burana'.

There is a good start! Take a look into culture guides for each type I mentioned and see what catches your fancy! Let me know if you have more questions!

And how could I forget about paphiopedilums! They can get intermediate to cool growers that also do well in phal light

Well I've never been inside a Whale but you are pretty right about the temperature in Wales

Oh my gosh that is a list! I will start exploring. I have added photos to my original post of my current Orchids so anything you notice I can improve on them please let me know! I am now at the point where I am thinking I have to cut the flower spike off the smaller one.. I assume I can find advice on that here somewhere. I will start exploring the threads.

I also got a surprise delivery off a friend (who is a much more advanced Orchid grower than myself) of two young Orchids. One is a *looks at the labels* ... Pleurothallis restrepioides 'Thelwall' and the other is Ansellia Africana var. alba. (This means nothing to me) she has sent me a huge list of care instructions though and i'm just exploring now for more information on the both of them!

Whoops! What a typo!

There are lots of different types to explore, but it sounds like your friend (and they must be a good friend at that! ) has already got the start of your expansion covered!

Good luck and be sure to 1) let us know if you have any questions 2) keep us updated on how things are going 3) post pictures of any blooms!

Good luck and hapoy growing!!
