I went to my first ever Orchid Show by the Denver Orchid Society. I just about signed up to be a member too, but the meetings are about 30 minutes away in downtown. I also got some information on orchid magazines, one is by Orchid Digest. I was able to order a sample issue for $10 before subscribing, so if anyone is interested in an orchid publication. Anyways, I walked away with two paphs, I'll post about those with photos in the Paph alliance. The very last photo is of an extremely large dendrobium (scratch that, it's a Cattleya). It was about 4-5 feet wide and I'd say 3-4 feet tall!

30 minutes? That's all? And you didn't sign up? Shame on you My suggestion is to try and go every other meeting. Orchid clubs can really help you to learn to grow orchids better than ANY BOOK. And you get a lot of free bees too. And meet some very nice people. : twocents:

Is that phal real? I mean, I see some sign behind it with crossed DYE? Gorgeous pictures!

Sounds like you had a good time! You should definitely join that society, 30 minutes is ell worth it for a good society! There are people who drive 1-2 hours to come to our meetings!

By the way, that last photo is a Cattleya, not a Dendrobium. It's a great specimen though!

You know what, you're right, it IS a cattleya. I saw so many things I forgot what it was. Thanks for correcting me! This specimen came from the greenhouse at the Botanical Gardens, so it's been pampered for a long time but it was still really cool to see and the guy said he estimated that specimen to be around 50 years old.

Pilot - too bad you missed this one. Perhaps next year?? High five for Colorado buddies!

and YES that blue/white Phal was real!! The sign did say "no dye" and "no ice cubes" (meaning it wasn't an ice cube phal), but I still have my doubts about that one. What do the experts think? I didn't see any information about how it was bred. I guess with what I've seen since I started this hobby (8 months) I'm a little skeptical.

haha maybe I will think about joining the orchid society. I read one of their newsletters and they had a vendor come in with FREE orchids for everyone, then the people had to report back with growth and plant conditions and what their growing conditions are at home (windowsill vs greenhouse). I thought that was really cool.

I hope everyone takes advantage of their local orchid clubs. They are such a great resource. You get to listen to professional speakers who give advice freely and are really interesting. Free orchids. Free media. Free pots. And great commeraderie. One of our members drives from Orange County to San Diego for work (70 miles) then drives home and drives back to our club. Sometimes she just comes straight to our meeting but it shows you the value of joining a club. You meet so many really interesting folks and it's a great place to show off your plants which would just sit on your table unappreciated by other than you.

I'm sorry, but that blue Phal is not natural, I guarantee it! If something like that were to come out, we would be seeing it at a much bigger stage than a local OS show, and we'd have known about that lie of breeding by now.

I'm pretty sure it is a display showing how unnatural and unappealing it is to dye orchids, hence the "no dye" stickers or whatever in the background. I have to say though...I actually kind of like the blue and white with the pink/red lip on this phal. xP
