Definitely an infection. Treat it immediately or else. I recommend spraying it will isopropol alcohol...both side of the leaf. I keep a mister with 70 percent alcohol handy for quick first aid when needed. Works so far.

Thank you for the information and the link, Barbara! I treated with Listerine and so far (fingers crossed!) it hasn't spread any more. I am checking it several times a day and if I see any worsening, I'll take the leaf off. This one has just started to grow a spike, so I really don't want anything to go wrong.

Doug, thanks for the tip on isopropol alcohol. I've got some swabs soaked in isopropol alcohol. Would wiping a leaf with these be advisable? Or is it better to spray it on?

shakkai, i poured alcohol pretty generously on cotton wool and wiped both sides of the leaf several times.

i've been doing it twice a day now with my isopropyl alcohol-cinnamon extract and i'm very happy with the results. the moist-looking translucent ring around the brown spot has gone smaller and no further areas are infected. i (still) cut off the oldest leaf. it wasn't in the best condition to begin with and the plant is growing a new leaf so i thought better safe than sorry...

That's good news! Thanks for the report. Its nice to see such immediate results. I'll use the isopropyl alcohol swabs that I have. This is the second newest leaf, so I was loath to cut it off. (Though of course I would do, if the alternative was losing the plant entirely!)

I'm curious Shakkai, how's your Aerangis doing?

Finn, I panicked and cut the leaf off. The translucent part went away after treating it a few days but another brown spot appeared closer to the crown of the plant. I wasn't taking any chances, so off it came. This plant has three growths (i.e. three crowns) and the one affected was the main one.

At least it won't keep me awake at night with worry any more....
