Ingrown Spike?
I have a Phal. that I bought in bloom last year. It has spent time outside this summer and kept growing new leaves like crazy, but it has just now spiked and is getting ready to bloom now in October! Isn't that strange?
It also looks like it started to spike that grew back into where it started from (pic attached). Does anyone know what this strange growth is?
Thanks!!

Exactly, but it is a loop - there is no end!

That is bizarre.
A part of me says just leave it.
But there is a very loud little voice in my head saying "Surgery is required!!"
I would probably dig around with a sterilized exacto knife and see if I couldn't 'extract' it.
No idea if this kind of thing could end up hurting the plant or not.

The poor thing got confused...any chance it is coming up in the next leaf up? It sort of looks like it may be possible, but I'm soooo not sure. Yay for plants stumping us!

You know what after re looking you may be right. Is the tip still stuck in there creating the looped look while it is really not looped? (Did that make sense) I kind of see @Reliablefool thought process I see the same shadow.

ok me thinks the grow tip is at the top right buried in the leaf above. I think the shoot emerged, got stuck in the leaf above and the shoot kept growing and created the 'loop'.

As far as being buried in the leaf goes- I have a huge Phal that the spikes cut holes right through the leaves (leaves are perfectly fine except the holes) but they aren't curly....

Yes. This happens from time to time. Oncids and brassias do this often. The tip never emerged and the spike continues to grow. You can cut the base of the next leaf up and maybe get the tip out but risk losing the spike or let it continue to grow and see what happens. I let a degamoara grow like this and had a loop with flowers.
