Any warm/hot growers (ex - phals) aren't going to appreciate any direct cold drafts. If the plant is right in the window and it's not an intermediate or cooler grower...then you should close the window...at least enough that the plant isn't getting any direct breezes/drafts.

If the plants are in the room somewhere...and/or if the plants are cool or even intermediate growers AND there is no direct cold draft...then they will be fine because the actual temp around them isn't the same as what is outside.

So, basically...cold drafts all night long aren't good for most orchids but a drop in temps in the room is ok...even good....for most orchids. Provided that drop isn't below what is in the acceptable range for any given orchid. GEEZ! Did I just make it more confusing?

As for the nightmare...YIKES!
No, you didn't make it more confusing. I don't know which (if any) of my plants might be cooler growers, though - that window has cattleyas in it, as well as a dendrobium phal and a beallara. I actually moved the beallara and the dendro out of the window last night (the dendro has flowers, and the beallara is in spike) but left the cattleyas there. =X

I agree with Katrina...it is the drafts that do the most harm. But 48'F won't hurt any of your orchids.
The cattleyas will be fine, don't worry. We had a long-time cattleya grower speak to our OS and, in the winter, he only heats his greenhouse to 45'F. Our plants our definitely spoiled!

My dowiana is punishing me for my mistreatment by pushing a second set of growths instead of resting.

That makes me feel better, lol, I woke up and realized it was cold so I looked at my phone for the temperature and was like :O!!! I woke my fiance up by yanking the blinds up and pulling the plants out of the window, haha.

They do weird things when you mistreat them, don't they? I moved my beallara from moss to CHC and it sulked, wrinkled ALL of its pbulbs, and then put up a new growth and a spike after sulking for two months...like...wtf? Lol. They are so funny.

Plants always behave in ways one least expects. Nice that your beallara is finally over its tantrum.

I'm excited. Now if its spike actually comes into full bloom and even if I only get ONE flower, I think I will run around screaming and jumping for joy, lol.
