Hi Leafmite! my orchid society is having a display and entering several plants at the Mid America Fall Orchid show in Dayton, OH. This is sponsored by the Mid America Congress and hosted by the Dayton and Cincinnati orchid societies. It is supposed to be the largest fall show in our area.

Regarding slipper orchids, they seem to be very popular. Every society meeting I've attended will always have several slippers, along with the usual Phals, Cattleya, and Dendrobium. But I just haven't figured how to raise these orchids. I own eight Phaps. and they have basically languished. Recently I bought another Phap. delenatii for the 2013 orchid project--hopefully participating in that grow project will help me understand Phaps. But I'm not going to go crazy with them as they seem to be difficult for me to grow.

It is the time of year when a lot of cattleyas and laelias are blooming here so we have Fall shows. The big one will be in two weeks down in Balboa Park for those living in SoCal. I'll shoot some pics to show you.

Yes, paphs are super popular with my society. They remind everyone when to add the lime or oyster shell to the calcium-loving paphs.
I grew two paphs for a while in lava rock (watered daily) and they really did well. I had them on a table over the heating vent so they were toasty, then put them in a shady spot outside in the summer. I had a maudi-type and a lynnleigh koopowitz. After a while, I lost interest and found them a new home.
I don't know if we will have a display. There has been no mention of one or a need for orchids. I know several people from our society are going. My youngest kid has a competition so I have to stay on this side of the state. It sounds pretty amazing.
James, I will look forward to those pictures!

how wonderful to see so many beautiful orchids all in one place! I love orchid shows!!! I went to one in okla city a few years back.....crashed it actually, lol...I saw it advertised at a certain date, so I made my plane reservations such that I would have time to drop in and view the orchids....only when I got there, I was told that particular time was reserved for the local society members and big wigs....oh my! as it was my only time to see the show, I asked permission, and they let me in! it was fantastic! all the beautiful orchids, and I got to purchase a lovely paph too! I love love love orchid shows! very good pics!

A Zygopetalum of some kind. I was impressed by the light blue lip. If I see it at the big show in two weeks I'll get you the name and where you might get one.
