Stuff growing in MSU/K-lite fertilizer mix
Does anyone have a genius solution to prevent the white stuff stuff (I think bacteria colonies) from growing in MSU/K-lite, other than straining it out? I realize it's not harmful, but it still annoys me!

I have not seen this in mine. Is it getting moist? Maybe those little bags that come in shoes to prevent moisture?

Is it in a liquid MSU mixture/concentrate, or in the granules? I've not had this problem either.... Maybe Ray would know?

Sorry - yes, this is mix of it - taking two pounds of the dry stuff and adding water to it, to make a liquid concentrate. When you do that, stuff can grow in it when it's been sitting.

Ups! Sorry, initial I did not understand you problem.
I mix RO water with dry MSU fertilizer to make concentrate liquid fertilizer but I never seen white stuff.

Yeah, a bacterial mat can form on the top surface of any fertilizer concentrate tank.
Some put Physan in the tank - it controls the bacterial bloom, but is very diluted by the time it reaches the plants.
Putting a germicidal UV lamp over the tank would also work.

When I make fert concentrate, I boil RO water and pour boiling water over the granules in a metal pot. Then pour the liquid into a glass bottle and keep it in the fridge. Lasts for months without a trace of anything organic.

Thanks all. Ray, any suggestion on how much Physan, mixed in with 2lbs dry to make 3gal?
I like the boiling idea too. My problem with the fridge is I don't want too many gallons of this or that, along with seaweed, KLN, etc to take up too much space. I think (most of the time) it's more important I have food for myself in the fridge than food for the orchids. This has not always been the case, however..........  |
