Here's another of my orchids with new growth. When I got this one the spike was broken so I cut it to the next node. That was months ago. Now it's got this growing from it...

Nice work. I'm only new to the orchid obsession so mine are still in bloom. I can't wait to experience (hopefully!) my first spike as well

Looks like a keiki growing on your spike. Also cool. When it gets roots you can pot it up, and you have a new plant!

Yep, that's a kieke! When the roots get to be 3 inches long (preferably a few of them), then you can remove & pot it right up! Congrats to you, as a proud new momma!! Lol

IMHO, my suggestion for potting up your kieke (I say this from experience, & from seeing other's experiences with this), would be to use a media that is open, fast draining, & that dries quickly. LECA, or Lava Rock, etc would be best, (you can mix in some bark to help with holding a little bit more moisture, if need be) because the roots that will form on this kieke will be adapted to living in the air, and will still want/need a good bit of air to their roots. You may need to water a little more often (or just spritz the top of the lava rock/LECA, on a regular basis, and water by flushing say, once a week... *Give or take, depending on your conditions).

When a roots starts to grow, it adapts to the environment into which it grows (if you're familiar w/ semi-hydro, then you probably know why Ray says to repot only when new roots are starting). So changing that environment... say, from the open air (where they grew), to a damp sphag moss, (or even to moist bark, or CHC) can very easily lead to root rot... Because roots can't change once they've grown/adapted to their specific environment.. And when their environment changes, they have to grow new roots that are adapted to the new environment.

Sorry for the long-winded comment

This is an old thread but I figured I'd just ask here....how long does it take a keiki to grow roots? This keiki is still growing leaves and seems to be doing good but no sign of any roots. The rest of the plant seems to be doing good too.
