Agreed. Having recently had experience with both, as I'm completely new to this hobby myself, I've lost one orchid that I suspect I overwatered, or was drowned prior to my adopting it. I've also had one that I forgot about because it was sitting in a corner behind a larger orchid. I don't think I watered it for nearly a month. It was bone dry when I finally got to it. That one's bounced back just fine.

Island Girl: This forum is the reason I haven't killed off my entire collection yet, so I'm happy to pay it forward where I can!

so i plucked him out his pot this evening and low and behold, I found the problem, just as expected he needs a much bigger pot! ...
several arguments later with my husband on how i should be doing it, it's done and not a bad job if i do say so myself! It was so badly overgrown I think I might need to go another size up very soon. the 15cm was all I had so will make do for now. Thanks again for all the advice. I'm sure this will be the first of many!!

Looks good! You've got some healthy roots there.

It doesn't need a larger pot. Orchids for the most part grow better with fewer problems if under-potted. Over-potting leads to root rot. The airier the media the better off the roots. Orchids grow on tree branches and tree trunks in their natural settings. We pot them in media to facilitate growing them indoors. Leave this phal in this pot for the next year. Water when the pot is light in weight. Then water thoroughly. Care must be exercised now that winter is closing in on us. Low light levels and cool conditions invite root rot.

I have repotted all my phal the moment i got it home when it was still in bloom . I was extra carefull with them making sure not to hurt them , and they bloomed for me longer than the ones that were in sphangum moss from the store and havent been repoted . They seem to like their new environment. Good luck
