Vanda Lumpinee Red
I finally bloomed my first vanda and I now noticed some of the buds on the end of the flower spike are dried up. The weather in So. Cal. has been warm days but now suddenly cool nights do you think this is what caused it? I'm so sad. I have so many nice flowers on it I'm getting greedy. I'd send a picture if I could figure out how.

It's possible the cool night temps are the culprit - I don't know what temps this hybrid likes, nor how cool your nights have been...
Hopefully the more knowledgeable Vanda growing members will be able to help!

If you click go advanced on your reply there should be a little window that you can click to upload photos of your Vanda.

I would be interested to see photos or get some info on this one. I got a free one from a grower and it looks to be blooming size. It's in vase culture. I've just been growing it like my others. Usually if they abort buds it's because the plant got too dry.

Vanda Lumpinee Red bud blast
I think it may have gotten a shock from the temp. drop but it wouldn't be a severe drop because it never gets really cold hear. It's been really hot(90's) and then really windy and cool (60's). It may have been too dry with the new windy days. I did receive some new seedling vandas and now I worry about them. Do any of you have any culture advice for any of these I'd appreciate it. I grow outside on my patio. It faces west and I'm in
Southern California. They are: V. Prao Sky Blue,So. East BeautyxCharles GoodfellowxAScda ThanabargxCharles Goodfellow,Vasco Vibbon Velvet Perfection and Robert Delight Klapat. Since we're into fall now I wonder at what temps should any go inside?

Lumpinee Red
I'm wondering if my vandas will be o.k. during the winter here. Does anyone have any tips for keeping the crowns dry during rain or when they should go inside. My patio is covered but not completely. I'm new to vandas and have been collecting quite a few from Hawaii growers online and at shows. I can't stop! I love them.

It's a bit cold in winter down here. If you live near enough to the coast you might be able to pull off cooler growing species.
I'd bring them indoors personally.
The dropping buds might have to do with the dry air funneling through SoCal right now. I know the winds at my house are very very dry atm...

I agree that it is likely the dry air. Do you have it bare root? If so, then using some sphagnum moss and a few lumps of charcoal in the basket can help hold the humidity longer and you can easily tell when the moss is dry. Then it's time to water. Some people use lava rock or coconut chips. We have hot dry summers here and I water every 2nd to 3rd day when there's a hot dry wind.
