The chitin at the joints lacks the fuzzy hairs and appears shiny when the light hits it at certain angles because of how smooth it is.

Some species can. It's a defense mechanism.

That would be SO COOL! I would have had another pet.

(And no, RJ was joking about it curling up around your neck. )

You are FAR more likely to get hurt -- not to mention seriously hurt -- by a dog, cat, even a horse. If fear must set in, may as well put it where it makes the most sense. Oh, and with that thought in mind stay away from any motorized vehicle.

There are very few spiders that have medically significant venom and few that will even try to use it on something other than prey except under dire circumstances.

So remember next time you stay in a hotel check under the beds 1st before you wake up with one wrapped around your neck trying to get warm
This looks like a VERY well-fed Grammostola pulchra! Nice spiders.

On that note, I've heard (correct me if I'm wrong) that granddaddy long-leg spiders (don't know the species name) are some of the most poisonous spiders on the planet, yet their mouths aren't big enough/not able to bite humans, so they are not the least bit dangerous to us... (I used to play w/ them when I was a kid, & no harm came to me from 'em ) I agree that there are far more likely things that will harm you, that you encounter every single day, to be worrying about spiders... The only one I'm scared-ish of, is the Brown Recluse.. I live in an old house, & I've heard that they are often found in older homes... Plus, I have seen one in my house... It landed on my elbow one night ...Not entirely sure where it came from, but probably the attic... I didn't like that too much, lol.. That's the only one I've killed.. I usually take any spiders I find in my house, outside.

@IslandGirl I am pretty sure that has been debunked about granddaddy long legs. Lol. Um Brown recluse are every where. I do think they like damp dark places though.

Opiliones, also known as harvestmen are not spiders at all (though there are a couple actual spiders sometimes called "daddy longlegs" -- hence another reason not to rely on 'common' names ) They are arachnids as are spiders and mites. The whole venom thing is pure hokum -- Opiliones have no venom glands to begin with.

While I am not debunking your sighting (as you very well may have indeed seen one -- I wasn't there so I certainly can't say otherwise), most of the recluse sightings made are erroneous. Unfortunately, wolf spiders and the grass/funnel spiders are often mistaken for recluse and killed.

@Paul I was taught at an early age their differences. Because I used to chase our kittens into the celler/basement at my Nana's. Also we have wolf spiders here by the truck load they are food for the dirt dobbers/spider wasps. Haha
