Also the better gro phal mix has sphagnum pieces in it as well.

It has peat, not sphagnum. The peat pieces are sort of fibrous, but you can tear them, which makes them kind of handy. I do that when I'm repotting, I will grab larger pieces of the peat and shred them so that I can wedge them into the pot to balance the orchid just so.

I'm still hung up on how you used a knife to stab holes? Is it possible you could have stabbed roots?
