Hello!

I am thinking about subscribing to an orchid magazine. Like a true orchid addict of course
Do you have any suggestions? good, bad magazines?
I have googled a few of them
I'm interested in:
-American orchid society- magazine Orchids
-Royal Horticultural Society- The orchids Review
-The orchid society of Great Britain- Journal
-Orchid digest and their orchid magazine

The limitation is that they have to be in english language.

I am leaning towards Orchids review by Royal horticultural society... Is anyone subscibed to them? I know there are not many Britans out here

Anyways.... reviews and other suggestions are welcome

Thanks in advance
Gregor

Good question!

I've also been considering treating myself with a magazine subscription. I think I know all my orchid books my heart by now and would love a regular top-up of something new.

Your English grammar and sentence construction is excellent. I guess all you need to do is practice oral reading out loud and acquaint yourself with English vocabulary, some colloquial terms and its meanings. Magazines are edited in a manner like textbooks are written therefore it is in formal English not the street English....
Your country used to be very fluent in French in the 19th century since it was the fashionable foreign language to learn and most novels, fashion magazines and 'made to order' catalogues were written.....this century its the English language that everyone is learning as a second language.
All the magazines you mentioned are ok. They don't have the latest accurate broadcast, you are stuck with what the editor wants to feed you....that is the nature of glossy magazines; its for entertainment and leisure.

Well thank's a lot Bud I try my best when i type a post... of course small (sometimes bigger) mistakes happen all the time

But i think you got me wrong...
I said that the only limitation when buying magazines is that they have to be written in english language since this is the only foreign language i know besides croatian ( i don't count portuguesee since i am still a beginner)
I didn't meant to say i am bad at english

Otherwise I dont have a lot of problems when talking,... I just need time to think what to say since there is not many occasions where i can use it out loud

Are you some kind of geography/history expert or...? you sure do know more about my country than i do...
Well much has changed since then... French is not common at all... A lot of people speak Serbo-croatian since Croatia is our neighbour and we have a lot of imigrants from Balcan.

well ok. Now i went completely off the topic.

back to the magazines.... thanks for the remark....
I'll probably just have to try one... and see for myself if it suits me i just dont want it to be trashy, full of commercials and informations that are not important... like results from a local show that i've never been and
will never go to.
I want culture sheets, new discoveries, photos, etc...

Still hoping for some good review

Regards Gregor

Well, Gregor, eventually you can borrow back issues before you subscribe. Our group members used to give me their American magazines generously for reading. I especially liked the old AOS Bulletin. This was at least a perfect training of the English language for me, which I had only for 3 years at school and skipped because I didn't like the teacher and conversely.
On the other hand, in this forum you get a lot of information, and joining a group of enthusiasts was indispensable for me.

One thing to consider is delivery. Not sure how well postal system works in Croatia. Some magazines offer electronic versions of their mags, like AOS Orchids, I think Orchid Digest is working on it. I just subscribe do AOS electronically, don't like all the paper in my house, and I can get it right away when it is published, don't have to wait for postal delivery. I also get a news journal from overseas (Der Spiegel); used to get old news in paper form, now I get up-to-date info through the web.

It also depends on what your interests are: species or hybrids, main groups vs. odd balls?

I'm from Slovenia,.. not from Croatia and yes the postal system works very well here so this should be no problem.

And i want it in paper form. I like it more that way

As i wrote before... I like reading culture sheets and new discoveries. And i prefer species over hybrids

Tropterrarium. are you sattisfied with AOS magazine?

Euplusia. i will probably do that. But i will have to buy some back issues since i dont know anyone who has it to borrow from them

There are sellers on Ebay for back issues of orchid magazines that you mentioned. I am sure they will ship to your country since it is just old publications. You said you have excellent postal service.... I don't know but it used to be you have strict censors who open your mails and confiscate....but otherwise that is your best bet.
*orchid magazines do not have a lot of commercial ads because they have major sponsors who finance their publications mostly members who pay $45 / year or more ....aside from being a subscriber, you also become a member and you are allowed to go online and research on their site.

I get Orchids magazine, I like it, they had an issue recently - a few months ago (can't find that issue ATM, & it's driving me crazy ...it's also the last one I had time to read, lol). In one article, they talked about all the species of Encyclias, including the more rare species... It had cultural info on each of them as well.. Really interesting.. ooh, plus they had pics!!

I'd also be interested in what others have to say about the other mags you mentioned, because, like you, I also like to have reading material... lol I also like to get paper magazines, just like them better... Altho, it would probably take up ALOT less room to get them via electronically
