Oh crap! I hate that! I have had so many sick orchids from the hardware stores. It's so frustrating!

Great Hubby!
I can't complain with mine. He used to buy me NoId phals instead of flowers until I had to many, he helps water sometimes, he helps photograph them, and the other day came home with a bag of compost the other day because I didn't have any to repot a Ludisia orchid. He also comes to shows with me and is quite tolerant of how much I spend at shows.
He even commented the other day that "well I never said I didn't like them". He likes them really but won't go quite as far as admitting it.

Did you ever manage to save any? I really want to save this Oncidium. I lost a phal this week and I'm attempting to save it too, but I may just let it go to the grave… but this oncidium, I really, really want to save it! I hate that it's sitting in that pot with the rotting bulb and I haven't already taken care of it!

RandomGemini that really was a cute story. How did you cut your finger? There isn't any orchid places around here either but I will have to say I have had good luck with the ones I have gotten at Home Depot and Wally World. Oh and Albertsons I have 3 mini phals the just add ice ones and they are doing real well. I re-potted my sisters and my moms but I still have to do mine.
They have not quite blooming yet so I have waited. I am going to have to do the one as I cut holes in the pot and the roots are coming out of it.

I've had *some* success. Most of them ended up croaking but I did have one make a keiki which is doing pretty well now that I potted it even though the mother died. I have a few phals that are hanging on, they don't exactly look fabulous or thriving but I still hope they will pull through. I think my downfall has been not cutting dead roots aggressively enough. So I would cut the obvious problem roots and soak in Physan but there would still be some marginal roots that would end up dying later. As a result the plant would have a brief renaissance only to crap out a month later. Lesson learned, I guess.

I cut my finger making an orchid pot for a cattleya that my daughter brought home from a big box store that had extensive root rot. I was using an exacto knife to cut holes in a starbucks cup we were recycling and the knife slipped and my thumb slipped and BAM! The doctor said it was a "textbook laceration" and that if you were gonna give yourself a laceration, that was how you should do it. LOL!
I have 3 just add ice mini phals that came from Albertson's. They are doing REALLY well. I just get them home and don't water them for like 10-14 days and then I will give them a good soak and not touch them again until the medium is bone dry. They seem to really like that sort of treatment. I tried the same thing with the hardware store phals and am not having the same luck. So I'll be mail ordering from now on.
Corsetiere: I'll make sure that I am not conservative with the cutting when I take out this bulb then. This oncidium does have 4 bulbs, so it should be ok if I take out one. This one doesn't have any new growth anyway and the others do.

Well I hope it heals up fast. I water mine more than that but it is easy to tell when it is dry. I cut holes in those flimsy pots there in because the roots look like they want to escape and it helps them to dry faster. I have one that is just starting a new spike I think. My new one, I believe you posted a picture of one just like it.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner but I went to take pictures and my camera was dead so I had to charge it and then I had to go to work. So here they are finally. I'm just going to post all 3 of mine.
The one I think is like yours is the last one I got and I think it is getting a new spike. The one I use in my avatar I think has the peloric thing going on. I did not know that at the time I bought it. I just gave the 2 that were normal to my sister and my mother.
