Wondering what my Coel. Burfordiense is up to...
Hi all! I am definitely a beginner, and I love this forum. I got this guy just a month ago in Hawaii and I am trying my best to care for it and it seems to be doing ok. There are a few black spots on one of the sets of leaves but they aren't getting any worse. Anyway, I wanted to show you the roots coming out of a stalk that looks different than the bulbs. Is it making a keiki (implying that maybe it is unhappy?) Or is this what it looks like when it flowers? Hmmm.
Anyway, see pictures below. Thanks for your input!
PS: It doesn't usually sit so close to the vent, this was just the best place to photograph it.

Those are just new roots growing from the base of a new pseudobulb. Many Coelogynes grow out and up like this.

A thing!
I must be doing something right with this guy, because now there is this! Something. (See photo.) I don't want to get too excited about the possibility of it blooming soon... It might just be a new growth and that would be great too. What do you think?
Also, second question - do you think I am watering too much? This bulb is pretty fat with very few wrinkles. The plant looks delighted, but I might be an overly exuberant mist-er....

Oh no... I think that's a spike. It's certainly growing from where I would expect to see a spike.
No, I don't think you're overwatering. I don't see any signs that this plant is being overwatered.

I have a Pandurata, which is related to yours. [yours is asperata x pandurata] It is growing the same way, but the new growth is not a spike. It now has leaves and is a new plant. I was disappointed. I'm still hoping for bloom on this one. From what I have read they like to dry out before being watered again, in fact the grower who gave it to me suggested mounting it. I prefer a clay orchid pot with good drainage.

I hope it's a spike. Mine looked the same but turned out to be a new plant.

These do get new growth like this - but, it is difficult to tell a spike from new growth til they grow and it becomes apparent
