Several questions about budding orchids Female
Talking Several questions about budding orchids

I have a supply of endless questions! ...

I have an orchid in spike and what I'm wondering is if it's normal to have a clear liquid drop of fluid under each bud. They almost look like water droplets, but I know they're being secreted by the plant. The spike looks healthy, but this plant has always has signs of some sort of virus with small dark brown spots on the leaves. There's always been signs of new growth, so I haven't worried too much, but have tried to keep it away from my other orchids. The tag says it's a "Mtssa.
Shelob 'Webmaster'"

Also, I have several phals that I have cut at the top of the spike after flowering. One is flowering right now, the other is budding. What I'm wondering is: HOW MANY TIMES should you allow it to re-flower before cutting the spike at the base? The one that's flowering right now has weak leaves, so I think I will cut that one soon no matter what!

Thanks for all your help!

Yes it's quite common. That's actually "sap" that is being extruded due to high turger pressure. This means pressure of fluids inside plant are higher than humidity (pressure) outside plant. I get it all the time and don't worry about it.

On Phal, that's your call. Many of us cut the spike right after the first bloom to assure healthy leaf growth. Others will argue that the blossoms are more important. It's up to you. Keep in mind, though, that many Phals wil slowly dwindle if kept in bloom too long.
