Bloom boosters are generally not advised these days (not around here anyway
) It used to be thought that the higher phosphorous helped promote new spikes. It's now thought that high nitrogen inhibits spikes and that the old bloom boosters actually worked because the phosphorus replaced some of the nitrogen thus lowering nitrogen levels and allowing flowering.
For many years now the recommendations for fertiliser concentration has meant that the nitrogen levels are low enough to not inhibit flowering. In the last year or so some have started recommending even lower again concentrations.
MSU is a good one, but there are plenty that you can use if you get the concentration right. The new low recommendations are around 8/N tsp per gallon (N is the first figure on the ratios of the chosen fertiliser). So for a 10-10-10 fertiliser you would use 0.8tsp per gallon. I worked out at one point the equivalent calculation was for the recommendations around couple of years ago... I think it was 13/N. So as long as you use it somewhere in that ball-park you should not have a problem with blooming.
