Oncidium Splendidum
I'm posting a few pictures of my oncidium splendidum in bloom. The blooms just fully opened on Friday 8/30. This is the first bloom for this plant as this plant was originally a division taken from a mature plant this May. I was even surprised that this orchid decided to bloom for me this year. The plant was originally labeled as a lanceanum, but it looks more like a splendidum to me. Feel free to chime in if you have any suggestions about the real identity of this plant.

Nice looking Oncidium, but it looks like a hybrid with some O. splendidum in it? Pure O. splendidum has much simpler sepals and petals.
Either way, nice bloom.

I emailed the nursery owner and I received this response:
"I don't exactly know it is a lanceanium or splendidium. I was told by the grower in Taiwan it's name is lanceanium. It is somewhat different from splendidum which doesn't have brown spots on the yellow lip. This one could be a variety of lanceanium having a yellow lip, not light pink lip. It could also possibly be a cross of lanceanium and another oncidium species with a yellow lip, such as kramerianum."
If this is in fact a hybrid, would $75 be too expensive for this plant?

Expensive (like beauty) is in the eye of the beholder. If I was told I was going to receive an O. Splendidum at a price of $75, I would expect a well-grown mature plant, with no question about it's genus/species. I would be disappointed by receiving a NOID Oncidium. But, if you are happy with the plant's health and appearance, this may matter less to you.
There are good cultivars of this species out there for less than $75, if I think of it tonight I will try to remember to look up some vendors. I've grown this species before, IMO one of the best Oncidium alliance species.

Clown Alley Orchids is offering O. splendidum 'Prolific' in r inch pots for $22. IMO that's a good deal.

I just checked out their website. Do they ship? I can't exactly buy orchids from Texas since I live in San Diego.
Also, I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that I love the blooms on my current orchid, but I can't justify spending $75 on a NoID oncidium. The good news is that the nursery owner has agreed to let me exchange the orchid. He said that he will stock up on some Onc. Kramerianium and that he will save one for me.

Yep, they ship. I've never ordered from them myself, *but I've heard wonderful things about them... You can check out the "vendors" section of the OB, and see for yourself if you'd like (the "vendors" section is a good place to look when you're wanting to order from a nursery you've never ordered from/been to)
