orchids how old are they?
I was very curious as to how old are orchids...did some searching and found....
Orchids are thought to be as of 2007, 76-84 million years old. An Amber-preserved stingless bee carrying the pollinia of Meliorchis caribea, which was the the first unambiguous fossil orchid known to science. Based on molecular clock analyses, they began to flourish shortly after the mass extinction at the so-called 'K/T boundary' between the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods, which decimated many of Earth's species.
This shows that orchids co-existed with Dinosaurs ![Smile](http://www.orchidboard.com/community/images/smilies/new/smile.gif) . I can see them big wooly mamminals chomping down on some huge bloom of a 35 ft tall orchid.
20,000 to 30,000 species are now known to exist, and the plants comprise 8 percent of all flowering species in the world today.
From ancient orchid pollen on the back of a bee we still learn young Padawan ![Big Grin](http://www.orchidboard.com/community/images/smilies/new/biggrin2.gif)

yes we are all Force sensitive 'OB' Wannabees Jedi Orchid Masters in training. We have passed the Initial trials and ascended rank within the Order of the Orchid. Those who are Padawan will be given more responsibility in teaching and training in the ancient ways of the Jedi Orchid Warrior to keep our orchids from falling to the Dark Side. ![Big Grin](http://www.orchidboard.com/community/images/smilies/new/biggrin2.gif)

Wow, thats really cool! Sometimes I wonder how old the orhids that I have are. I mean if it takes 2-3 years for a seedling to bloom then I bet an orchid could live a very long time. I know the ones in grocery stores are mass produced and they're growth is sped up, but still.

Dendy, I have read accounts of plants that have been in continuous cultivation for over 100 years! As for me, I have a few plants that I've been growing since 1984 or 1985. (Of course, individual pseudobulbs and leave come and go).
