What are the rules on endangered species
I saw when shopping again... online a dove orchid and it says *endangered species* I guess I was under the impression that that was kind of illegal...Kind of like hunting certain animals is illegal due to the endangered species list...I am not buying on that is for sure don't need that kind of pressure on my shoulders. WHEW!
I mean what if you accidentally kill it no matter how hard you try. You just killed something of an endangered species.....AUGH!!! I can feel my hair becoming gray as I think about it!!!

It's fine if it was not taken from the wild.

I'm sure there are probably plenty of endangered orchid species that are fairly (even quite) common in cultivation. Some that may be extinct in the wild, but thanks to cultivation, live on.
That said, if there is a doubt about a particular plant - best to be sure it hasn't been wild collected. I'm not familiar with this orchid, so I can't say how likely or not it may be that it was not collected from nature.

Depends country to country and state to state. I am aware in my own country I can order orchids and of course other plants which are rare, endangered etc in the wild. The dealers are licenced to do this and have acquired their plants through breeding programs or have rescued plants found at land clearings and similar where they are likely to have perished. I have no problem with acquiring plants this way providing that they are certified as such.

Yeah, I once had a Laelia jongheana -thought to be extinct in the wild, tho I didn't know that when I got it (was actually a freebie plant with an order) - tho when I found that out, I really felt a lot of pressure to keep it alive! LOL! Didn't help that it was a tiny seedling, which I always kill! Did well for a couple of years, croaked after I repotted it I felt terrible

It is illegal and immoral if you collect endangered species in the wild. But if there are lab grown plants from flasks or green house grown from propagated seedlings, then it is our duty as orchid growers to care for it and propagate more plants so it wont be endangered anymore.
My example is:
Euanthe sanderiana that is poached almost to extinction in the mountains of southern Philippines= yet the labs in Thailand and some labs in California and Florida have produced flasks by the thousands that is presently grown in any orchid collector's home....this orchid have migrated all over the world used for crossbreeding purposes= this is a fine example why we must grow it and propagate it.
*another is The flower of the Holy Spirit that is Panama´s national flower. This flower is found in El Valle de Anton, province of Cocle. Its scientific name is Peristeria elata. It blooms between July and October. You can find it near rivers and streams in a very humid environment. It is white (ivory) and seems to have a little dove in its center.
I possess both of these orchids because I feel that if someday somebody will have a need for it for any reasons at all= I have it ready for scientific inspection, photographs or propagation of its seeds.

Paph druryi (my flower, my avatar) was thought to be possibly extinct in the wild for quite some time, due to over-collection and fires in the very small area where it grows (on the planet). It was re-discovered recently when people that were hiking took a picture, and someone that 'knew better' saw something in the background.
People could and can still posses them, buy, trade, etc, as long as it complies with CITES.

This is just one of many examples. As others say, NEVER should something be from the wild - someone else posted on here about my plant a while back, asking questions about theirs - from the wild - and it was cringe inducing for me.
