new vanda on the way

Okay I ordered a Vanda Paki x Vanda Bill. How do I grow one of these. I thought about placing this in the Vanda threads but was unsure where to put it....To many names...

I know they like light and high humidity. What are potting/ growing requirements

Vandas like to be housed in hanging baskets. If you decide to pot them make sure they dry out well in between waterings. They like high humidity, mist in the AM. I live in North Carolina and bring them outside for the summer. Hosing them in the morning is an easy way to water them. Water the roots until they turn green. Vandas cannot tolerate full sun all day long. Morning sun is okay but mid-day sun will burn their leaves. I keep mine in an area where they receive filtered sun. I started out with one Vanda last May and now have 10 !! My "Sunshine" vanda stayed in bloom for 5 months....Nov. thru March !!! Indoors I had it under four T5 bulbs. After adding a HPS light, only on for 2 hrs. a day, I was rewarded with a spike one month later. Needless to say, I'm crazy about them. Their flowers are huge

What type of potting media? Define hangin basket? B/c I think of the ones with the fuzzy filling.

I think "orchids44" means the wood slat baskets or the plastic hanging baskets, not the moss lined, wire hanging baskets.

Those can work, but they're high maintenance.

If you're very busy, I'd just grow in a clear plastic container that's large enough to fit the roots and use large grade bark.

If you're having difficulties finding a clear pot that's large enough, you can use a clear container and drill lots of holes in it.

Here's an example:

Get a large jar of chicharones (aka dried pig skins), eat them as snacks, (they make great tasting snacks, imo; they're not healthy snacks, though), and save the container as a Vanda pot for a large Vanda with a large root system.

Im sure I can find a wooden box. They have a version of what you are of speaking of at home depot if not w ill google what one looks like and make it

I have a Holcoglossum (formerly Vanda) potted in a clay pot, medium fir bark and lava rock, as well as some styro pnuts. Watered every couple of days here in summer (low daytime humidity).

ahh did you notice these were 1-2 years from blooming?

You had to have gotten that from Carter and Holmes.

Usually they have very nicely grown plants though and you shouldnt get a mess in a box

I would just leave it in whatever it came in. It wont need anything else for 3-4 years. Dont be in a hurry to rip it out of the pot and put it in a basket. Its still a seedling and the 1st time it gets dry its going to suffer.

If this is true, they are even easier to put into a clear plastic pot, (should you choose to do so).

Potted culture of Vandas are far easier to accommodate if they're grown in a pot starting from a small size, and are continued to be grown in such a manner.

O yes I love carter and holmes they triple wrap theirs and tightly place them in a box. I usually put them in sturdier containers so when the barn swallows that live in the eves of my porch they dont knock them over
