The hibiscus I have get full sun all day and enjoy it. The hydrangea gets light/mid sun all day. We have a large oak tree I could put them under. I just have to fight the grasshoppers and fire ants.

Ok, I would put orchids by the hydrangea then. very bright all day with some direct sun here and there is the ideal location.
You could try all day sun but you really want to cover up with some shade during the midday as orchids will be cooked in that heat.
Don't worry about grasshoppers and ants. They won't eat cattleya nor dendrobium.

Nice! I like Dends. Have you ever tried a Grammatophyllum? They grow fast. Take full sun and their blooms are beautiful! Blooms last a LONG time!

Have you thought of cymbidium? They're pretty tough and can take a little frost. They are one that is usually easier to find than some.

I'd only go as low as 55 F for any Grammatophyllum.
I don't know if that counts as a "winter chill" or not.
