Plastic cone?
Default Plastic cone?

Hello all!
I am a newbie here, as well as in the orchid world. I've been hesitant to dive into this realm...but finally took the leap and picked up my first orchid today.

I have a pretty Phalaenopsis orchid. It's an a plastic cone, within a terra-cotta pot.

Do I remove it from the plastic cone?

Also, I plan on setting it on a window-sil in my bedroom. It gets sunlight, with only limited direct sunlight first thing in the morning. We do like to open the window at night. Will the cool air be detrimental?

Nope, just the opposite. The plastic is the actual 'pot' and most orchids do better in plastic than terracotta. That sounds like a good amount of light and I shouldn't think so unless you open them after the nights start getting cooler. By the way, can you tell what roots the condition are in?

I would also look into maybe changing the potting medium. Sometimes the potting mix that you get them in is not good at all. How do the roots look?

Congratulations! And

I would say that window (which I assume is facing east) is perfect for your Phal. The cool air at night will be perfect! Just don't let the temp get below 55-60°F (they r tropical plants, but do like a slight drop in temp to initiate flower spikes, but not below a certain temp, as it would cause damage). Watering with "lukewarm" water would also be apprieciated by your Phal too.

As to the plastic cone... I actually have no idea what it could be? If u could post a picture, that would help us to know, & maybe other canadians have found the same thing in their pots, & they can advise? If u post a total of 5 times (so 4 more for u) you will be able to post pics. Can't wait to see your new Phal!

Thank you so much everyone!

The roots on the plant look good from what I have read. There are a couple peeking up over the edge. They are light green, firm, slightly shiny/waxy at the ends.

The plant media has what looks like moss and woodchips. The rest of the plant looks healthy as well..although the leaves are a bit dark, which makes me think it needs more light. It's new home on my window sil should should help

We only keep the windows open now, since it is so hot during the day...once it starts getting too cool, the window will be shut! Luckily as well, the window is right below our air circulation vent, so that should help the plant not to get soggy.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I have much to learn!
