Should I repot this Lc. Twilight Song?
Should I repot this orchid now? If so, how do I repot it with some of the p-bulbs growing so high? I am scared to bury older growths...would they rot?

I'm no expert in repotting but I'm curious to see what other will say. But let me say your Catt is looking good so whatever you are doing keep it up. You growing it indoors or outside?

Hi,
Thanks. I grow in my home. I tried a few Catts outside this Summer as an experiment. I will have to see how it works out. I lost a lot of my orchids in a recent rot episode when my central air broke and we had a bad heat spell with soupy humidity. This one was in part of the house that wasn't as affected...thankfully

Looks wonderful. I am looking forward to others replies as well. My question is how do you keep yours sitting upright. When I had mine in a similar pot it kept falling over and making a huge mess everywhere.

Hi,
Mine does too. I held it and balanced it. I usually have it in a clay or ceramic pot to keep it upright. I hope some experts chime in with advice...fingers crossed

Hello! I'm thinkin a bonsai-type pot (that's more wide & long, than is deep) would work, you could plant sideways-ish/at an angle.... Mr James Mickelso posted a thread about a Catt kinda like this, (lol, this'll explain way better than I could describe, b/c there's pics) http://www.orchidboard.com/community...bies-here.html in this, (in the last couple pics) he does show that he buried part of the PB's.
Your Catt is a really beautiful Catt! (Btw)
Tho, I wonder (you would know better than I), if you did plant this way, would you have a Catt w/ growths growing all over the place? It's hard for me to tell by just looking at the pics...

Hi Mary Linn!
Thanks for answering. I am going to look at the thread in the AM. I am tired feel cross eyed at the moment, lol
Thank you for the tip on the pot type. I have some that I can bleach from the rot episode that fit your description. They are made of clay and have side slits.
It may be all over growth. I haven't grown many Catts for that long. I am still newbie with them and learning.
Thanks again

Unless you have to have this catt planted upright, there's no reason you can't plant it at a slight angle getting the new growth closer to the media. The older pbulbs here are nothing but storage vessles. What is important is the new growth. Repot for that. This will take some doing but you can wind the new roots into a pot that may seem a little large for this size plant but if you take up a lot of the room in the bottom of the pot so the media isn't too deep, plant at an angle, and tie the plant into the pot, by next year you'll have most of the new pbulbs upright,.

James, is it O.K. to bury a little bit of the lower portions of the old PB's down into the media? & would the rhizome be O.K. being even lower into the media as well?

Even though it is possible to repot at any time, I prefer to wait until spring (March usually). Repotting causes stress on the orchid and in the spring the plants metabolism is increasing and new growth is starting. That can compensate for the stress of repotting. I would wait but if you really want to do it now, it can be done. It's just that the chances of success are little better in the spring.

It's best to find an angle where the pseudobulb is not buried. I prefer clay pots because cattleyas are tall and fall easily. If you don't mind spending a little money, two items that can help with potting cattleyas are a short ring-stake (4" or 6") and a pot clip. Here's a link (I hope it works) to some photos showing how I use ring stakes and pot clips. Pot clips can be used alone for some orchids. Unfortunately the pots in the photo are not available unless you live is South Florida but use a small clay orchid pot.
