I would wait but if you really want to do it now, it can be done. It's just that the chances of success are little better in the spring.

It's best to find an angle where the pseudobulb is not buried. I prefer clay pots because cattleyas are tall and fall easily. If you don't mind spending a little money, two items that can help with potting cattleyas are a short ring-stake (4" or 6") and a pot clip. Here's a link (I hope it works) to some photos showing how I use ring stakes and pot clips. Pot clips can be used alone for some orchids. Unfortunately the pots in the photo are not available unless you live is South Florida but use a small clay orchid pot.

Thank you. The pictures are really helpful. I am going to buy those supplies. I have some pot clips. The ring stakes will be helpful. As some of my catts have grown they have become space hogs because they tend to grow to the sides too. That would keep the growth more upright. Thanks again

Cattleyas are much less likely to suffer from rot if they're given more calcium. Clacium helps the plant to build strong cell walls that resist fungus and insects. During the growing season use a fertilizer that contains calcium, like one of the cal/mag fertilizers, or use a cal/mag supplement a couple times a month. I use a Supplement called MagiCal (a hydroponics product) at 1 teaspoon per gallon, twice a month during the spring and summer growing season.

MagiCal is made by Technaflora. If you have a hydroponics store in your area they'll have a cal/mag product from one of the major hydroponics companies. Most of those companies offer one and I'm sure they're all good. You can search for calcium magnesium fertilizer in Amazon and there are several cal/mag supplements offered. Buy the smallest bottle. You don't need much.

The shortest ring-stakes seem to be the most helpful. Don't buy anything taller than 6".
