Bark mix should be ok, so long as it isn't very fine.

I use bamboo skewers (kabob skewers) in the pot/potting mix to help determine when to water. Search the board for "skewer", or google "skewer method orchids".

This time of year, the potting mix should not be allowed to dry out completely - shouldn't be soggy tho - water when skewer feels nearly dry (skewer should feel just somewhat cool yo your skin). In winter, they can dry slightly, but not be left dry for long periods.
