Epsom salts are actually useful. I have given mine them, like a few grains per 2 gallon of water. Come to think of it, I am getting my very first ever orchid spikes. Maybe this is the cause?

Not sure if epson salt pushes the spikes, but definitely works for the new growth:-) And yes, it is great to have some knowledgeable people around to get advise and tips, plus help, after he re pot my Epidendrum, it doubled in size within this summer, so obviously good decision there:-)
