Bringing Wildlife indoors, is mounting wild orchids wise? Female
Default Bringing Wildlife indoors, is mounting wild orchids wise?

There are some NoID dendrobium(?) keikis groing on one of the trees near my office. I have never had an orchid, as they can be kind of intimidating, but I have recently begun getting more adventurous with my gardening and want to try one. The groundskeeper here has encouraged me to take cuttings of any plant I want on our very jungle-like campus.
Questions:
Is it wise to try to 'tame' this wild plant? or should I start with something raised in captivity?
From researching I am thinking that mounting it would more closely mimic it's natural habitat, but if I bring it home, which is an area that is less rainy and warmer and windier than this valley (Hawaii climate can change significantly within a few miles) will it be too difficult to maintain moisture?
I am still getting used to Hawaii gardening, only been here 3 months, but the temperature does not change drastically throughout the year, how does that affect the growth phases?

Thanks everyone

Your Dendrobium is most likely not native to Hawaii. Go for it.

That's my short answer for ya.

Cut off a keiki when it has a few roots and mount it on some koa with holes drilled into it or cork with a small pad of moss under the roots. When you cut it, let the cut heal for a day before mounting it.

Many plants and animals here are not native, they are driving out some native species, which is sad.

look for the keikis that has 3 to 5 inches roots and just twist it off the mother plant and pot it in fine bark media mix then let it accustom to your bright windowsill and your room before you attempt to mount it outdoors....let it mature for a year until it can fend for itself.... seedlings have a high mortality rate if you get it out of situ....
