First Bloom - Paph dianthum
Picked up a little seedling this year at random, and it decided to bloom :-) So here's it's first time around. I think it's a keeper! Second growth coming along nicely too.

OMG I am amazed at that flower Young Man. Woa!!!
I am amazed because when I looked at your first picture, the plant at the bottom of the stem, the leaves the greenery, it just looked like all the Orchids I have got.
The vast majority of mine are plain ordinary Phalaenopsis Orchids that I didn't spend a lot of pennies on.
If one of mine were to produce a flower like yours has I would drop down dead with amazement.
It just looks like any regular orchid, but to produce a flower like yours is incredible to me.
Wowser

Well you really do learn something new every day don't you?
Thanks very much Rosie, I never knew the correct term for them was twizzly petals! Yes, they really are gorgeous.

Might not be the correct term... it's what I call them though

Lorna,
You can do a google search for "paph parishii", "paph lowii", "paph robinianum" - the first two are species, and paph robinianum is a hybid of the two. They are similar to this plant. They are often called strap leaf paph's, because of how their leaves look, compared to others. These plants tend to grow very large and take a lot more light compared to some of the other types of paph's. This one is just a little baby! But I think you get the idea.
Bill and Rosie - my twizzly petals just finished twisting, so I figured it was time to take the picture!

YAY!!
Thanks for them Mister J.
Off to have a look right now.
Thank you for the message Young Man.
You know how you say that these need more light compared to some?
Well if it's standing in the window with all the others and it's a nasty day, (usually is in the UK) and the sun only comes out for 2 hours that day, do I have to stay up till 3 am with the lights on to make up for it?
There's only 24 hours in the day and if it's not sunny and bright coming through the window, is it really the same leaving the lights on all night for them?
How can you give it more light than the season or the country gives ya?

O M G
They are so spectacular.
Especially the first one. The second one looks like a helicopter, but that paph parishii one is amazing.
You clever man. I might just go see if I can find one of them. (Doing a TOMMY now)!! Soz TOMMY.

I grow most of my plants under T5HO fluorescent lights. I have a wire shelving rack with three levels of plants/lights, and then another rack that sits directly in front of a frosted window adjacent to it. So, I can adjust things as the weather and whatnot dictate :-)
