Another cause of root rot besides overwatering is too large a pot. The orchids should be in a pot just big enough to accommodate their roots and a bit more for growth. Too much medium and not enough roots to use the moisture will stay too wet and the roots will rot. Besides, orchids bloom better with tight shoes.

I try to check daily, but not by pulling the orchid out of the pot. I have most of my epiphytes in clear plastic pots.

Occasionally, I'll dig through the surface of the potting media to check and see what's going on.

I reserve pulling the orchid out of the pot to check for roots when I have reason to believe they are doing poorly. Sometimes I catch it in time, other times I don't.

I try to repot most of my orchids as soon as I get them, or the first chance I get to do so.

Sometimes I get super lazy and I don't repot the orchid right away when I first receive the orchid, and I will pay the price later on.

I can only echo what's already been said before. Repot straight away into clear plastic pots.

Cheers.
