If I am not mistaken you can grow a lot of orchids outside in P R. I saw a lot of them growing in trees when I was there a couple years ago. Welcome, and good luck....Jean

You lucky person to find a cattleya at Home Depot. Ours only gets phals. They are nice but always the same.

magicatt: Shelves and lights? uh oh this sounds serious..

bellini girl: Thanks! Remission huh! yup I think I'm in trouble now

White Rabbit: Thanks!

DweamGoil: Thanks!

vjo: This time of the year the sun here is scorching hot where I live, they would burn. But definitely fall or winter I could maybe put them out on the front porch, I would love to do that!

Ferns Daddy: Thank you!

Myrle Diefendorf: They seem to have many varieties. I saw dendrobiums and some others, don't remember their names. Didn't have time to look some more . but I will be back!

Orchid hugs to all of you nice people!

Welcome! You said in your first post that you mist them - a word of caution on this, as some people's experience has been that while it 'feels' nice to do it, like we are taking care of the plants and all, it's also a good way to spread bacteria and other icky. Since you already have great humidity, you probably have no need for it anyway.

In the mean time, relax and have fun, is my motto!

Welcome! There is a thread here called "The Phal Abuse Ends Here" that will teach you all about phalaenopsis and how to care for them.

Since you're in PR, I would imagine you could totally grow them outside and have no issues at all! Cattleyas like a lot of bright light, and some will even take direct if you ease them into it. I've got my cattleyas in a west-facing window that has a piece of lace in front of it to cut the light and they are happier than pigs in slop there.

My phals hate me, though, so I will refrain on trying to give you any advice concerning them. =\ I've read books and threads and asked 8 million questions here and still killed a bunch of them..>_<

The cattleya would grow much better outside, I live in Central Florida and we get a ton of sun, which is good for that type of orchid.

Welcome! And, yes you are amongst many, many addicts on here, we call in "Orchids Anonymous", but that would imply that we help you stay away from, & not give in to your addiction, or that we wouldn't ever try to influence you to buy more orchids... or show pics of beauties that u just "have to have"... heheheheh (We just like to enable one another! )

I would grow them outside if I were in PR! Just find a nice, shaded (shaded all day, &/or just a little sun in the early morning hours) for your Phal, and a slightly brighter spot for the Catt... Then, you can probably even increase the light for the Catt, and it'd be even happier!!

jeremyinsf's: OMG! I think I just found out the hard way about misting! One of the phals flowers got droopy and I dunno... I'm waiting to see...

butterfly_muse: LOL phals hate you! OMG I'm going to have a talk with it right now! I'm scared

FSUOrchids: Taking all the advice and going to place it on my porch in indirect sunlight! I'll just watch it and see how it does. Thanks!

Island Girl: Orchid enabling is a good thing! I'm going to put them outside and see...

Thanks for the welcome guys! You have given me courage to experiment!

Orchid hugs, and may we all have an orchid filled day!
