Habenaria medusa - where to buy?
Hi everyone
Tomas again, another help request. I was able to get pretty much all orchids from my list for this year, except Habenaria Medusae. I can't find any online seller, neither seller here in Florida. My seller in Seattle had some early spring but he is out and won;t have any till next year. any ideas or links where to order now??? Thanks so much for help again

Give Steve at Fishing Creek orchids a call! I'm in El Salvador at the moment, so I don't go into the greenhouse to work, and therefore can't tell you the price. But if you give him a call and tell him that Quay sent you and he will help you out!

Ok, i think that medusae is not bog one, from pictures I found it seems it can be grown in pots, so it should work, also I think it should do well here in Florida. Thanks Quay for the info, I will try to find phone number somehow and give Steve a call to check on one:-)

Anytime! We grow our Habenaria medusa like any other Habenarias. In clay pots with Sphagnum moss that dry slightly but never go completely dry.

Hi Tom, I'm aware of what you mean when you are saying, "I think that [Habenaria] medusae is not [a] bog one."
Habenaria medusae is not a "bog orchid". They do not grow in bogs.
I believe these grow in moist sandy soils near riverbanks or stream banks in tropical southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. While it is 100% known which countries this orchid originates from, it is not 100% confirmed that they grow near streams or rivers, it is also not 100% confirmed that they grow in sandy soils in the wild, (I'm more like 80% - 90% sure they grow in sandy soils), but I vaguely recall that there was a rather obscure reference to the natural habitat of this particular species of Habenaria. I just can't find it at the moment.
When I say that I think they grow near streams or rivers, I don't mean that they grow smack up next to the water's edge; they most likely do not. They most likely grow further away from the water's edge, but it still gets moist in those areas.

Thank you all for the help. First of all, thanks Quay for the phone number, will definitely call, and also, for the advise how to grow these. I still want one, I think it will do pretty good in our humid hot Miami weather, however I did hear from someone yesterday that this orchid is grown kinda like a tulip, from the bulb, which you pot every year, and in fall you take the bulb out and store it till spring, or you leave it in the pot and than it starts to grow again next year? Sorry to ask so much, I am just trying to make sure I know this time what I'm getting myself into, I am absolutely not familiar with habenaria's and it seems like these girls are just different from other orchids, some must grow in bogs only, and others might be growing from bulbs, like this medusae. I will appreciate all the info be4 i buy it. I love the way they flower, it would be such a pleasure to have it blooming and take pictures, but I want to make sure I will be able to do grow this at my balcony:-)

Quay, so you say you grow them only in Sphagnum moss, that's it?

Habenarias in general come from very diverse habitats. It is very difficult to just say that they all grow in one type of environment, because they just don't.
For example...
Habenaria rhodocheila is actually a lithophyte that grows on consistently moist limestone cliffs and outcrops. Their roots and tuberoid are growing in between rock crevices amongst fibrous plant material. These limestone rocks are so moist, that moss often grows on top of them. This particular species must be given proper Ca supplementation in order to do well.
This is a stark difference already to what you know about Habenaria medusae.
