Hello,

So today was a bit upsetting. My first phal 8 purchased last year, seems to be a bit sick.

First off, after the blooms fell off, a green steam remained with what looked like a new growth at one of the nodes. Today I noticed that it had begun to dry out and the new steam had dried out as well.

After further inspection on the roots, they were in ruff shape as well. Mind you this plant has always had such beautiful thick healthy green roots and leafs so I am surprised. There were many dry, flat, rotting roots. Some roots have black spots on them as well.

I trimmed the bad roots and left what seemed to me to be healthy roots. Sprayed with neem oil/water mix to ward off any infection and fertilized, ad washed the bark.

I have attached a pic, please le me know what I can do to save my 1st phal. Thank you

blooms fall off, normal. sometimes growth or new bloom from a node, normal.
You attached 4 pics and I assume they are taken the same day?
some pics looks like the roots are wet and green, others dry & white; still look healthy from what i can tell.
looks ok to me, i would advise to cut off the bloom stem.

Your roots look fine to me... All healthy from what I can see Not all healthy roots are green, sometimes they are white, or yellow, or even brown... As long as they aren't mushy, or hollow... (*if they are firm*), they're ok.

Alot of times, bloom stems (a.k.a spikes, or inflorences) die back when the blooming is over. Spikes can ~sometimes~ (as the poster above me said ) produce growths from the nodes on the stem, either growing another inflorence, so they can bloom a little more, ~or they can produce kiekes (baby orchids, that will be identical to the parent plant). One more thing, sometimes the bottom leaves will yellow, & die back as well, this is normal, and they usually will start a new leaf pretty soon after (soon in orchid time, which is forever and then some, in real time, lol... so, have some patience... Lol, I have to tell myself that a lot! )

This is a thread that will help you learn a lot about caring for your Phalaenopsis, it is kinda long, but trust me, it has valuable info there! http://www.orchidboard.com/community...ends-here.html

Agree with the above.

Assuming the last picture is the remaining roots after trimming, they look fine, a good number of remaining roots.

Pot back up in the smallest pot the roots will fit into, and care for it as normal. I agree about reading 'The Phal abuse ends here' thread. Even if you don't read all of it read the first few pages where there is tones of info.
