I had a similar rotting issue with an oncidium intergeneric that got too much rain water in a new growth...it took out an older bulb with it, but thankfully enough survived that now it's growing again.

I find that fans are always good to have, unless it's some sort of specialty orchid like a leafless or something.

I will disinfect with Physan and try Pro-Tekt too. Do you think it can be added to Solo-E or should I use it the week in between the Solo?
|
I just add it to my regular fertilizer mix, a quarter teaspoon Pro-Tekt per gallon of water. It contains some potassium (K), but at that dilution it doesn't add much (label shows it as 0-0-3, i.e. 3% K).

I am so sorry for your loss! That is heartbreaking when that happens... this happened to me last year, so unfortunately, I feel your pain...
I've been using this stuff (labeled as a fungicide) called "Root Shield" it is a beneficial fungi called Trichoderma harzianum. It helps fight off the types of fungus that cause root rot & damping off... Last year, when I had my orchids outside, in 90°+ and very high humidity (this is coastal North Carolina!) I lost a bunch of Phals to root rot & other stuff (mites also ). This year (hope I'm not jinxing myself) I haven't had one case of root rot (with a one & only exception being a seedling I lost, that was recently deflasked, & endured an 8 hour car ride, but the other flasklings are still ok). I started applying Root Shield 3 months ago... Feb-Mar? And my orchids love it! I have also heard other success stories from other OB'ers which is how I found out about it. Another member had the same prob w/ root rot (high temps/high humidity), and by the next year, after using this fungus, he had no more problems! I think "Keithrs" is the member's name? Just do a search for "Root Shield", or beneficial fungus, or Trichoderma.
I got Root Shield from Gardener's Supply Gardener's Supply Company | Garden Supplies and Gardening Tools but there are many other products that have this fungi in it. It is a bit expensive for the amount (4oz - $19.95) , but a little goes a long way, and it's definitely worth it, once you've sprayed it a couple times (2-3) they are in there, they will get into the roots, and stay there - systemically! I think one thing that kills them is temps below 50°...

Does that only work for rotting? Maybe I could try that for oncidium leaf spotting?

It's more of a preventative (@ least it works better that way) I don't know about leaf spotting... I had an Onc. Twinkle last summer... it died. This summer, I have an Onc. Sharry Baby, and no leaf spots what-so-ever.... Even in all this heat & humidity... but, I don't know if that's normal for this particular hybrid, or if the Trich. is keeping the spotting at a minimum? It's worth a try tho, it certainly won't hurt your plants! The package of RootShield, it really lasts a long time.... the 4 (?) oz bag I have, I have been using the highest dose, and spraying as often as I can (b/c I was hoping to get them ready for this summer heat & humidity!), and I still have a good amount left. It is certainly worth the price, and I think if you got more (like 8 oz, or more) you wouldn't use it fast enough.. Because I think u would want to use the pack within a year of purchase.
Sorry, SJF, I didn't mean to hijack this thread! I do think this stuff can help you tho! (prob more as a preventative, to help the survivors) Back to topic!
SJF, I have some P. leuddemaniana kiekes that I could send you (for free, of course), if you are interested? PM me if you are A pic of the flower is on OrchidWeb (that's where I got it awhile back, last year, maybe?)

No need to apologize. If it can help anyone that is great. I am going to try it too. I am going to PM you. I would really appreciate the kiekis. I don't think I got the Phyton 27 applied fast enough. I am losing the battle. All of the ones that don't seem as affected got moved to a different sunny room. I don't want them near the sick ones.

I had a huge onc. Sharry baby in the past. not a single spot. I think it is more common in smaller ones like the red velvet types. At least the red velvet varieties sold at TJ here are always heavily spotted.
It is a pity because the smell so nice, but they look so bad with all those spots on their leaves.
and scares me. lol
SJF, rotted portion must be cut away because it will not stop on its own but only spread further fast.
