Help with phal keiki please!!

Hello,

I rescued a phal from my mum who wasn't looking after it properly. It was almost dead when I got it but I have managed to bring it back and its growing a new leaf and there is new root growth also.

It has a small Keiki on the top if its stem it has a couple of small leaves and a few small roots. I understood that you should wait for the roots to b around 2" in length before removing it and potting it up. (But the longer the roots the better?)

Anyway today I watered it and it looks like the stem is starting to die!!! Its gone a dark colour and a bit wrinkly. Can I remove the keiki and pot it up?? The roots are only about 1/2" in length!!

I was going to remove it and cut off the stem once the keiki had longer roots for the mother plant to be able to recover properly but im worried now!!

It has a few roots so I feel it is safe to remove and plant it in its own small pot. The spike dying just means the mother plant has moved onto another stage of its own growth or that the keiki isn't drawing energy any longer. I have a Phal that has six...yes, six keikis that are all still attached on their spikes to mom and hose spikes are mostly dead but the mom and keikis are now spiking. I left them on figuring there is no harm being done. The keikis has grown their own roots so extensively into the pot of the mom that they'll likely never be apart. Lol. It'll be quite the show when they're all in bloom.

Looks like you have 2 keikis, I would wait those roots are not that long so it you cut it off I don't think the keikis will live, but that's just what I think I don't know very much about keikis.

Hi there! I would let the keikis stay on the mother plant for longer as the second keiki has no roots at all. And I would use a good fertilizer for the mother plant in order to recover, rather than cutting off the keikis. Plus, the stem doesn't look that bad (yet!).

WOW Pilot 6 keikis!!! Bet it will look amazing once its in flower. It will be like an orchid forest!
