Vacationing with orchid(s)?
I've seen plenty of threads on this forum about what to do with orchids while on vacation (sitter, bath tub, etc.) but I've yet to see any discussion on people taking orchids with them on vacation. Perhaps I'm insane, but I'm seriously considering taking one of mine with me to Pismo Beach in August.
I have a nice sized Vanda Pachara Delight in a wood basket with no media. It gets pretty dry during the summer in northern California but it has continued root growth since I picked it up at the POE in February so I didn't want to mess with a good thing. The humidity does rise quite a bit at night near the San Francisco bay and I spray it 1-2 times daily and give it a good soak 1-2 times weekly. Leaving it for nearly a week in August would not be good, so I'm considering taking it with us on the 3 hour drive to the central coast. I'll surely be able to keep it adequately watered then and I should be able to find somewhere to hang it in the light.
Here a pic.
I know I'll have to protect it from damage and overheating during the car ride, but is there any reason I shouldn't do this? My wife thinks I'm nuts but I've already come to terms with that.
Anyone else have any stories to share?

As long as it is within the United States, (or within your respective countries), it's fine.
The problem with bringing the orchid along with you is that there are international laws that prevent it from happening.

I don't know where you are staying, but we have a cabin an hour away and when we go in the summer I often bring one or several if we are staying for a few weeks. If they are in bloom and I don't want to miss out or whatever reason. So one plant isn't too bad if it can be managed at your destination. Flying would be another thing, but at least Vandas are heat lovers so a ride in the car at temps you can stand should be fine for the Vanda. Just like a child or pet, don't leave it alone in the car while you take a lengthy lunch break! It might be cooked when you get back!

I know of people who take most/all of their plants on vacation, and I once came back from holiday with a car full of orchids; no reason not to as long as you think the conditions at the other end will be OK. When I go away, it's usually by air, and often to another country, so bringing plants along is impractical at best. Also, I don't have a car that would comfortably accommodate *all* my plants and the baggage that normally accompanies us...

I bring all my orchids with me when I go to the beach for the summer. Which is a little over 30 orchids, at the moment, for around 4-5 months. I pack them in liquor boxes.. they fit well, in between those slats they have for separating bottles, & I cut/fold them or whatever (cut/fold the slats, not the 'chids, Lol), to make the oddly-shaped/large orchids fit.

I say take it along. But what puzzles me is why you think a vanda can't go very long without water? I've had vandas and they went two weeks without water and didn't skip a beat. I just put them in a more shaded cooler spot while I went backpacking the sierra. Am I missing something?

I'm on vacation right now w/ like 3 of my chids in bloom, one a new Neofinetia I got in spike the day I was home btwn vaca spots... This is also my first time stepping out on them for days at a time. I have to say tho, after the first half being away last Wednesday through this Monday and coming home to find them staring back at me like "what you're back already?" I feel better about the second half of my vacation time away from them (not that I don't check the weather app for the potential harsh summer storm passing over, lol). My wife has a metric ton of plants on the patio this year including lots of veggies, so she had a friend come stay and plant sit. I just have them lightly mist in the morning and hope I don't miss all the blooms before I get back
Oh, and I soaked everything in between too with this heat wave we have up here right now just in case
*trying so hard not to be paranoid...

So, how many people here have webcams set up to watch their orchids while on vacation? I haven't done it... yet.
