Is it normal for new growth to stop?

Is it normal for new growth to stop? I noticed that some of my chids, (oncidium, potinara) started new shoots a month or more ago and have pretty much stopped growing, at least noticably...is this due to the cooler weather? I'm in Ontario Canada, so it's starting to get cold and the furnace is now turned on to around 69 F I try to keep the window open a little for some air circulation, but if it drops down to a frosty night, I shut them. I noticed my Eplc roots are starting to grow pretty quickly....this whole business is very confusing to me....still a newbie....

I don't really know why it's happening but had something similar happen to me. I noticed that my Burr 'Nelly Isler' new growths stopped growing (in september). Then one day I accidently knocked over the plant and discovered, with great horror, that there were no healthy roots left!

So it could be something bad like this, or be a normal part of the plants cycle. Lets wait to see what the pros have to say...

Yes, cool temperatures can slow or stop growth, as can diminished light levels.

Don't be confused, Helen. Different plants can act totally different from each others.

You don't have a direct draft on them do you? I was always told that is one thing they hate. Air flow is good, draft is bad. Not sure if this is the reason, but wanted to throw 2 cents into the pot! kiki-do

QUESTION: So at what point does air flow from a window become a draft? once the 'breeze' reaches a certain temp?

Okay thanks Ray. I guess they will start up from where they left off once the conditions are good....

Now how ya feel Helen. All my warm blooded multi paphs are starting at me with very disgruntled expressions right now. New growth has come to a screeching halt.

Not sure I remember what the suns looks like either!

I'm glad I'm not alone...it just seems so strange that they send out a new shoot about 4- 6 inches and then stop...I'm looking forward to spring already
