Expanding your orchid collection

This nice healthy orchid came from Lowe's in one of those plastic baggies in the houseplant orchid area. It was grown by H &R Nurseries in Hawaii and is named Epidendrum Green Hornet. I potted it in a slatted wood basket in part bark, part sphagnum. It hangs on my back porch and gets morning sun, water by the hose a couple times a week, and orchid fertilizer every couple weeks by being soaked in a bucket. It needs to come inside before frost.

There seems to be some confusion over what this orchid is actually called - I saw your flowers and thought "oooh, Prosthechea". The RHS orchid register suggests that Prosthechea Green Hornet is the correct name... for now at least.

The cochleata parent of this has been an Epidendrum, an Encylcia and is now Prosthechea as various trends in taxonomy have come and gone. I would guess this has gone through similar changes as it's parents have changed genus.

It looks like it's really well grown, what a lot of flowers!

I have had this cross about a year or more. It is a cross between Cocleatum x Lancifolium,the pod parent being the Cocleatum. Ever since DNa they have been befuddling us with name changes, and I can't keep it all straight.

Beautifully grown and healthy looking. Sometimes it seems it's harder to keep up with the name changes than to grow the plants...at least for me. LOL
