So there's someone out there worse than me... whew
I started back in January and now have 27.... Only one casualty so far. It's gotten to the point where I had to make the decision to stop buying them and focus on growing, understanding, and enjoying the ones I have. I definitely have a wish list but I've cut myself off...
Until my birthday
I figure as far as addictions go, it could be worse.

Nope, not me, Nope, I'm no addict! *looks around to see if anybody is believing that crap*
Yep, u are amongst many fellow addicts... Including me
I have about 30-40 (not counting a flask or two ) that I collected inside about 10 months, although, I have had a couple orchids for a few years, just didn't get serious til recently Would have about 10 more, but I had a mite attack last summer (I lost so many, b/c it wasn't spider mites, & it was hard to identify... (I've never had mites before), then it was very hard to fight off, b/c I had the 'chids outside ) Oh well, you live, you learn You have a nice collection going! I'm liking where ur going w/ this! What r you getting next? Muwahahahaa
I have also cut myself off... No more for a little while... Gets expensive! (@ least until I can make more "for fun" money )

I guess I took longer to get obsessed..My niece gave me my first Orchid last July, Just recently I've gotten 5 more phalaenopsis & 1 oncidium which i divided because of how many roots it had. I'm now wanting a spotted phaph...that might take longer to get.

Nice to see a fellow junkie lol. My addiction started as a gift phal that was already half dead by the time the flowers dropped. I've always had a green thumb and enjoyed taking care of various house plants, so I wanted to save that phal and started reading. Such fascinating plants!
I forced myself to stop at 15 orchids - not hard to do since my wife and I live in a small condo already filled to the brim with houseplants. Like a previous person on this thread, I'm trying to learn alot more before going full tilt. It has been so enjoyable watching my orchids grow and understanding their life cycles. I just got my first homegrown flowers popping on a B Little Stars I bought from Lowe's 6 months ago, the scent is just incredible. I've lost one so far, a paph, but I learned alot from the mistakes I made on that poor little thing.

Have you started to re-arrange your furniture yet, to make room for more orchids? That was when I knew I had a problem.

haha I love plants, orchids are the new thing.. I'm interested in the phylogenic , and phylogeography aspects of biology. Next I will probably focus on Angreacums, but honestly, i'm thinking about Brassidiums, and more leafless types of leafless orchids(want to do lots of research on this CO2 exchange and so on.). I love reading botanical journals, and research papers about plants period.. I'm also interested in the toxicology and physiological effects of plants on the human body.
And I'm about to start flasking some as well hopefully soon.. I got a free flasking hood sooo, I get to play around..
I like hearing stories so if anyone wants to share how they got addicted please do tell

I use plastic net pots sunk right in the substrate for the terrestrials in my viv. That way the plants benefit from the nutrients and moisture from the surrounding 'ground,' but I have the option of checking on them/moving them around if the need arises. A good thing too, because while my jewel orchids LOVE the constant moisture, I nearly lost my supposedly moisture-loving masda to soppy root disease and was able to take it out just in time for it to recover.
But yes, my addiction also began with a gift - a grocery store NOID phal I got as a birthday present, (despite insisting to my boyfriend that I absolutely cannot and should not own living plants). The poor little guy is now no longer with us (er, the orchid, not the boyfriend - he's stuck around despite our apartment turning into an indoor garden over the course of six months)... I bought a second phal to enjoy while I worked on trying to resurrect the first one... and then I discovered RESCUES. I was able to build quite the collection for $3, $5, $7 dollar each blooming size plants. And then I decided to build a vivarium, where I discovered the fabulous world of online orchid ordering. There was really no hope for me then.

For me it was when my brother gave me a grocery store phal. I unwrapped the paper on the pot to find crazy roots in every direction. Got on the interweb to see what was normal and realized that they were perhaps the coolest flowers I had ever seen.
I am only 2 months in, and I have 13 plants. Love the phals and anything vanda.
