Thunia spp. are generally not very popular amongst beginners because most beginners have never even heard of this genus. I'm surprised you know of this genus and are posting in the beginner's forum!

They are generally either epiphytic or lithophytic orchids that come from tropical southeast Asia.

I don't believe they would be terribly difficult for you to grow.

They are not very small plants though. They get to about 1' - 3' tall, and have a reedy type of habit.

Moderately bright light. Intermediate to warm growing from what I gather.

From what I understand, when they are grown right, they keiki all over the place. When the keikis get large enough, the stem that the keiki grew out of will lean. This is a natural thing for it to do, because when it grows lithophytically, the keiki will have been placed into position for it to continue growing.

I don't personally own one, but there is some info about this orchid on the web.

You might even find a few people's older posts on the OB about this genus of orchids by doing a search. There is a search button on top of the page below the advertisement banner.

Hi!
I've got a Thunia from 3 months. When it arrived the was only one little new growth and now they are two. It's placed outside towards south behind a protection: I suppose I must move it in much more light because the growth in getting too slim and long. It's always moist but not wet, in bark. I don't know if can write the name of the vendor here (it's in EU, the plant cost 20€). I put a pic taken this afternoon.
The hard part of the cultivation is during winter rest, because they are very very sensitive to root rot: just little moist but absolutely NO WET.

Hello Gregor, Thunias are easy to grow as long as you respect the growth cycle and winter rest. They are also easy to propagate.
I got one as a bonus plant from orchids & more. The other one I bought from Elsner. Lucke and Wlodarczyk might also sell Thunias. Alba and marshalliana are the most common species here. They are not always on the list, but you can ask for it.
Give it a try, its worth it.
