The purpose of the AirCone pot is to allow... good air movement :-) So, if it goes inside a pot with a tight fit and no holes, you are going to restrict the air flow movement and could have problems.

I have many of the glazed, ceramic kind made just for orchids, an example only here:

that I use in the living room when displaying things in bloom. I also have a couple on the grow racks I use for the psychopsis orchids because the ones I have are very top heavy and these have solid footing. In both cases, the pots have holes for airflow and also the ones I use are over-sized for the plants going in them. Thus, lots of room for air to move around, but still serving the purpose.

As luck would have it, the top of the decorative pot was only 4.5 inches wide so it won't fit the 5" aircone pot anyways. I think I am just going to leave the plastic pot naked and leave well enough alone

How big is the pot that its in now (the plastic not the decorative one)

It's in a 4", but the roots are coming out of the bottom. I also want to add about a good 1"- 2" of styrofoam peanuts at the bottom for drainage and to take up some of the space.
