The decorative pot does not have any holes and the base is a bit narrow. I am thinking maybe I need to rig it to stay up higher and let more air in

The purpose of the AirCone pot is to allow... good air movement :-) So, if it goes inside a pot with a tight fit and no holes, you are going to restrict the air flow movement and could have problems.
I have many of the glazed, ceramic kind made just for orchids, an example only here:
Amazon.com: Round Orchid Pot/Saucer - Glazed Ceramic - 6 5/8" x 5 3/4" - Red: Patio, Lawn & Garden
that I use in the living room when displaying things in bloom. I also have a couple on the grow racks I use for the psychopsis orchids because the ones I have are very top heavy and these have solid footing. In both cases, the pots have holes for airflow and also the ones I use are over-sized for the plants going in them. Thus, lots of room for air to move around, but still serving the purpose.
Hope this helps a bit!
