they are right...by looking at the picture it is dehydrated....you have humid atmosphere but you still have to water the plant everyday, it is a lab created orchid and it is not a specie from the wild....you need to understand this plant is used to all the pampering of a laboratory environment as a seedling before it was grown and released for commercial purposes.
Root tips are usually large and green or brownish purple when its actively growing....when the plant reaches a point where it spikes and develops flowers a notice that these tips get smaller and eventually the tips shrink back to just the velamen. They aren't dying back ass you will experience later that they will start to develop again. Unless it shrivels or gets damaged they will develop again once the plant has finished flowering and is actively growing leaves and roots again. My belief is that these tips are an indicator of sustenance in the plant and is used up during flowering.
